Bannockburn.Scotland ../ Robert bruce memorial.
its basically a metal horse\man statue -in the middle of a field locals walk their dogs in-to shit

Love Paris and NYC.. Just wandering around soaking up the atmosphere.. . Think NYC feels exactly how you would expect it to from watching movies. Which I love about it.

Only place I didn't like was a very touristy resort in Turkey 20 years ago. The vibe towards women was horrible and threatening.
However id love to go elsewhere in Turkey, it looks like a beautiful country and have met lots lovely Turks since

Live in Dublin and love it, sea, mountains, parks, good fun and friendly ... but can understand why people would be underwhelmed as its not comparable to other cities on those lists.

@TattoedLady @explainthistomeplease

Yes… to clarify Glasnevin, Howth, Dun Laoghaire and Kilmainham are all in County Dublin. Outside of the city itself, which is what people are referring to.

Kilmainham Gaol is a walk away from the Guinness Storehouse in D8, Glasnevin Cemetary is on the northside of the city in D11...both in Dublin city.

Sure Howth/Dun Laoghaire are Co. Dublin but still just 20ish mins on the DART. It takes longer to get from the V&A to Camden market. But I suppose as someone from Dublin I don't see them as 'outside' Dublin, given they're so close to, and so accessible from, the city centre.

Robinni · 05/09/2023 00:58

@TattoedLady why would you think of Howth and Dun laoghaire as “in” Dublin 🤔 clearly times have changed.

Sorry if my north side geography is off; I lived south/in Wicklow.

I think the point is that just outside Dublin, particularly south where you have access to the sea and mountains, is pretty amazing. But the city itself hasn’t got much to it. Though I do think it’s safer than somewhere like London/Barcelona which is something.

As I said for anyone considering - stay Dun laoghaire or one of the places along Dart route around about, venture out to Wicklow and have a day trip into city centre is prob enough.

CanNeverThinkOfAName · 05/09/2023 01:04

New York definitely. Such a disappointment, terrible homeless/begging/subway stabbings problem and the coffee was atrocious everywhere.

Venice - stinky, massively overpriced and very rude people.

Amsterdam - boring unless you want to get high.

Dubrovnik - again massively overpriced and nothing special imo.

Loved Florida and everywhere I've been in Turkey though so maybe not attuned to high end places!

Fredflinstoneswife · 05/09/2023 01:07

Barcelona was a big bore. Not keen on Madrid either.

Not that I had high expectations particularly, but Chicago made me feel like I never wanted to see another US city- so characterless.

I see quite a few mentioning Dublin.. I wonder what people's expectations of dublin are to begin with..

ShellySarah · 05/09/2023 01:20

Barcelona. It was a certified toilet.

Dontcareforthehaters · 05/09/2023 01:34

Dubai
Egypt

Underminer · 05/09/2023 02:48

Niagara Falls.

katscamel · 05/09/2023 03:28

Niagara Falls....Canadian side...spoilt by Over development, another Canadian one...Quebec City, found it far too pretentious though admittedly it was pretty. The Pyramids and Cairo in general though it was many years ago.

1415isgreat · 05/09/2023 03:29

Paris for sure. I would happily visit London over Paris any day.

fruitnutz · 05/09/2023 03:34

Ballyhornan beach is breathtaking ?! Hmm

What is the most overrated destination you have ever been?

I want to love New York and feel like I'm missing something, but it is SO built up, makes London seem like a rural village! Just not for me, I don't get it.

It's an island and couldn't be less like London if it tried. And it doesn't try.

CallItLoneliness · 05/09/2023 03:54

I love(d) many of the places on this list (NYC, London, Vancouver in the fall, though I fucking hated it in the summer), Barcelona, San Francisco.

Places I think will disappoint others or have found disappointing:

  • Auckland, NZ--like any city anywhere, but without decent public transport. As a Kiwi, I advise people not to bother with Auckland.
  • Gold Coast--as tacky as Vegas, but without the wow factor
  • Fiji is a bit of a tourist trap. We went there with our 3 yo while I was pregnant, and it was fine, but only fine
  • I fucking HATED Madrid. Hated it. Unfriendly, dirty, and the Prado was awful. I did like the Reina Sofia, but you'd have to talk me into going back
  • Austin, Texas. People say it's liberal for Texas, and that it is fun and funky. I found it....not at all liberal, fun or funky, and actually disturbing. I had a better time in Pittsburgh, honestly.
Alondra · 05/09/2023 03:55

London. I've been there 5-6 times (first time in the 90s) and always loved it. Last time I visited was last year and was surprised how run down, dirty and unsafe it was.

EconomyClassRockstar · 05/09/2023 04:02

I hate Oxford. Birmingham is gross and totally smelled bad the day I went. York?! Too old and boring. Manchester? Their accents are shit. Liverpool? Who the fuck in their right mind would go to Liverpool, even if they were paid to?! Cornwall? Like any other beach on sea but without the sunshine 90% of the time. Devon? Bunch of wingeing locals moaning that there are too many tourists. Wales? Where's that? Is that in Scotland?!

This is how this and every other similar thread reads like.

givemeasunnyday · 04/09/2023 22:30

It's the stereotypical Brit thing isn't it? Travel the world and expect everything to be just like home. Travel is wasted on so many.

And people wonder why they get called whinging Poms!

Your comment makes no sense considering people are complaining about places not being exotic enough (everything homogenised, commercialised and heaving with tourists or too like UK scenery). Others were afraid of crime or simply underwhelmed.

elm26 · 05/09/2023 05:03

I didn't like Berlin or Paris at all.

Marmaris in Turkey was an absolute shithole however I did like Olu Deniz and Antalya. Probably would never go back though.

Loved NYC, went in December about 10 years ago and felt magical. Loved every second.

Have family in Florida so grew up going there, love it there also. Not fussed about Orlando but where my family live is lovely.

LemonTreeSkies · 05/09/2023 05:14

I loved Bali but we had a couple of Indonesians - one of whom had been to Bali many, many times - in our group which I think gave us a completely different experience

Toocooltoboogie · 05/09/2023 05:20

Travelled around New Zealand for nearly 3 months - bought our leaving date forward. Wouldn't go back.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 05/09/2023 05:31

America

Undecicive · 05/09/2023 06:08

India.
The dirt...

Cardifflost · 05/09/2023 06:17

Agree with Venice- no soul, no local population anymore just people taking selfish.
New York pretty disappointing or maybe my expectations were top high. Apart from grand Central station that I loved.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 05/09/2023 06:24

Horses for courses! Love this thread. Also love Peckham, always something going on.

Zone2NorthLondon · 05/09/2023 06:27

😀very true. Inevitably thread will cause offence and someone will dispute the (embellished) diatribe
