How to get to Cyprus with out flying??

LadybirdStone · 04/09/2023 16:40

I might need to get to North Cyprus, medically I can travel but not via plane.
Ive looked at cruise ships from Southampton to Cyprus, but as they are holiday and sight seeing takes 17days! I know about the restrictions on going into South Cyprus if you enter the north from Turkey etc

Mammoth road trip and ferry from Greece??

Seat61 is my go to for getting to places via train and other forms of public transport. They say it's 5 days from London to Cyprus via train/ferry, but looks like the ferry only runs fortnightly in off season. They do give an option of a freight ship from the UK.

It's Katowice in Poland?

Why would you travel to Cyprus via Poland?

Mysleepisbroken · 04/09/2023 21:59

You can get a series of trains through europe. One option is uk to France to Germany, Hungary and Romania, then get the daily train from Bucharest to Istanbul. Paris to Bucharest is about 36 hours, Bucharest to Istanbul about 20hrs. Then a bus (shudder) for 17 hours to Silifke where there is daily ferry or 4x weekly catamaran to north cyprus.

There are other options getting the train to Athens and then a ferry from there to Limassol and crossing the Cypriot border, but I haven't checked that route. I have done most of the first route (until Istanbul) but not in one go!

You could book sleeper coaches for some of the overnights, but it would be absolute hell.

I had a quick look - it's bloody miles away. I hadn't realised how far!

It would be a hellish journey that would have to have an incredibly important reason to do.

You need to get to North Cyprus?

I know you have read the restrictions - and it seems to be difficult to get from North Cyprus back into the Republic of Cyprus. So if you get into North Cyprus, I guess you are thinking of flying back.

There are ferries from Turkey to North Cyprus

North Cyprus Ferry, Northern Cyprus Ferry (northcyprusonline.com)

You just need to get a train and bus to Turkey

Get an interail pass with 4 days travel. Get yourself to the ferry ports in Italy. I think either Ancona or Bari go to Cyprus.
Man in Seat 61 will know

LadybirdStone · 06/09/2023 15:05

@cakeorwine yes a need 🙂
I know if you cross the border from the south you can go back that way, but if you enter from Turkey to the north you’re not allowed to then go south.
It is a long way, maybe cruising for 17days is the way to do it!

Mammoth road trip and ferry from Greece??

Just wondering did you get there in the end and how? My elderly mum who’s from there wants to go back one more time but isn’t allowed to fly.

LadybirdStone · 20/07/2024 18:34

We didn’t in the end. I hope you can find a way to get your mum there, it sounds like a big thing for her to do.

If you’ve got the time and funds I would imagine cruising there from the U.K. would be her best and most enjoyable option?
