...He was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold...

Anyone care to add a line or two or more ?

To Be A Pilgrim was a big hit in my school

He-ee who would valiant be
Gainst all disaster...

newnamethanks · 04/09/2023 18:04

Morning has broken
Like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken
Like the first bird
Praise . . .

These are bringing back lovely memories of school assemblies in the 80s.

James Partridge on Instagram does great keyboard versions of assembly songs, and has a tour where you can sing along, or even play your recorder! 😃

If I find myself without my phone charger when I need it, I always think 'No charger have I and no sword by my side'.

Ah, when I was small I thought the words were 'I am the Lord of the dance Settee' 😂

I thought it was 'the Lord of the brown settee' - to go with the furniture in 'Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, how lovely are your brown chairs?' Grin

Twas the 70s after all

Dance then, wherever you may be
For I am the lord of the dance said he....

Or according to one of my pupils "I am the lord of the damp settee"

Lovely, happy memories of school assemblies on bright autumn days with a new school year beginning.

Phineyj · 04/09/2023 18:22

This is great! Been trying to remember the middle verse of the Knight one for ages!

When I needed a neighbour, were you there, were you there?

Brefugee · 04/09/2023 18:23

(it was on one of the Heardles the other day which is why it's fresh in my mind)
Did anyone else sing "Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world, red and yellow black and white they are precious in his sight..."

Phineyj · 04/09/2023 18:24

Also, how does this one continue?

Holy Holy Holy
Lord God Almighty

Something something

Casting down their golden crowns around the (salty? stormy?) sea

Our song shall rise to theeeeee!

I'm an atheist, but i flipping loved singing these songs. Wish i could sing some of them now, they're fabulous tunes.

Redavocadoes · 04/09/2023 18:31

Loved when a Knight won his Spurs

Also loved Men of Harlech (our primary school headmaster was Welsh)

TheTecknician · 04/09/2023 19:04

The golden cockerel crows in the morning
Wake up children
Welcome the day...

God's bright sun is riding the heavens (apparently)
Chasing sleepiness away.

Let him in constancy, follow the master.

FatandRoundBouncingontheGround · 04/09/2023 22:36

There's no discouragement
Can make him once relent
His first avowed intent
To be a pilgrim!

Iheartbobross · 04/09/2023 22:38

When I needed a neighbour were you there?
And the creed and the colour and the name won't matter, were you there?

Would give my right arm to go back to a good old nostalgic assembly.

pengymum · 04/09/2023 22:40

Ooh! I love hymns & carols!
This was a fave!
And the creed & the colour and the name won't matter
Were you there?

I loved:
There is a green hill faraway
Without a city wall

Morning has broken
Like the first morning!

Can't think of any I disliked!

Sang When lamps are lighted in the town at our last Junior School Assembly & everyone was in tears but we struggled through to the end.
Still brings tears to my eyes!

Iheartbobross · 04/09/2023 22:43

Oooh they're all coming back to me now!

My grandfather's clock was too old for the wall, so it spent ninety years on the floor

LaMarschallin · 04/09/2023 22:44

It was taller by half than the old man himself
But it weighed not a penny weight more

CarPour · 04/09/2023 22:45

SleepingStandingUp · 04/09/2023 17:46

I thought it was steer as in horse given he's already holding a lance

It was a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand?

I dont remember any spears or steers

AuntieJoyce · 04/09/2023 22:45

If I’m going back to my 1970s C of E childhood, can I just say that Jesus I have promised needs to be the original version.

The jaunty second version that they shoehorned in one autumn term was just a travesty. And it didn’t scan.

As you were.

Melroses · 04/09/2023 22:46

See the farmer sow the seed
While the field is brown,
See how God has sent the corn
Up the field and down.
Farmer farmer sow your seed
Up the field and down.
God will make the golden corn
Grow where all is brown.

Wait a while and look again
Where the field was bare,
See how God has sent the corn
Growing golden there.
