Pizza toppings…no base

I saw this recently and can’t stop thinking about it:

It’s such a basic concept - pizza without the pizza base. So I suppose a bowl of cheese, protein and veggies? It sounds so silly but I think because we don’t have it in the UK papa John’s, I’m craving it. I guess to a certain extent I feel the pizza bases can be bland and the toppings are the enjoyable bit.

Papa Johns Releases New Pizza Bowls with Tons of Toppings but No Crust

Papa Bowls are Papa Johns’ first-ever crustless menu item

M&S used to do a meat base pizza which was good, you could make that at home with all the toppings

So... a salad?

Ostryga · 03/09/2023 21:13

Mutti do a lovely pizza sauce in a can. It’s not that far off papa john’s. Could fry some onions and your topping choices, mix in the sauce and stick loads of cheese on top and grill.

D'you know what would be lush? Dipping massive pieces of garlic bread into that cheesy, tomato-y gloop......

wavws · 03/09/2023 21:22

@ShadyPaws@Dragonwindow you both reminded me of these amazing dips M&S used to sell at Christmas! I think they are behind my craving of these pizza bowls

@AuntMarch no the ratio would be different, possible more like pasta or lasagne without the pasta ie more sauce less salad

I've never had a salad like that before...

Dragonwindow · 03/09/2023 22:10

Argh, I'm so hungry now! This makes me want to hollow out a rosemary and garlic tear and share loaf, fill the middle with this incredible concoction (yeah yeah, I know it's just pasta sauce, some token veggies and a shit load of cheese), and use the bread that came out the middle to make amazing olive oil croutons for dipping. Like a massive pizza fondue.

Fuck it, I might have to get out of bed and actually do that.

wavws · 03/09/2023 22:32

@Dragonwindow I’d do it if I had the ingredients to hand! I even considered ordering a pizza just to scoop off the toppings…

Iceland have a new partnership with a protein brand and they do a meatzza, it sounds gross to me but to each their own! And actually I've made pizza using chicken as a base so I'm a bit of a hypocrite 😂

Whataretheodds · 03/09/2023 22:40

Like a burrito bowl. Why not?

SoggyBottomsUp · 03/09/2023 23:05

I'm low carb and this is my go to "fakeaway". While the rest of my family enjoy their carb filled pizzas, I cover the bottom of a glass baking dish with pizza sauce (Mutti as someone mentioned previously is the best!), then sprinkle grated mozzarella (I sometimes mix in some cheddar too), add my favourite pizza toppings and bake in the oven at 200C until hot and bubbly. I let it cool for a few mins and then dig in with a fork.

It tastes exactly like it would if you peeled the toppings off a pizza crust and ate them. So good! 😋

SoggyBottomsUp · 03/09/2023 23:07

Domino's in America have done this for a couple years already media.dominos.com/stories/oven-baked-dips/amp/

I only ever eat the base of the first few slices of pizza then just scrape the toppings off otherwise I get too full. DH eats all my naked pizza bases dipped in chilli sauce
