Going to York and looking for a lovely restaurant to have an evening meal for my partners birthday. Looking mid range, special, but not too fancy.

Iv been looking at Rustique, Lucias and Ambient. Do any of these fit the bill? If not where do you recommend?

Thanks X

Rustique is lovely; I've always had great food there. Fits the bill perfectly!

Had great food at both Lucia's and ambinate multiple times in both York and Beverly

Only think to note with ambinate is it is authentic tapas style serving so if you order 5 dishes they won't all arrive on your table at the same time it will just be as and when each dish is ready.
We understand this but went with friends who really didn't like this style of service and said they wouldn't return as they wanted to eat all the food at the same time

I really like The Blue Barbakan

if you like italian food Delrios Restaurant York – The little Italian restaurant down the stairs by Micklegate is amazing. some of the reviews are about them being a bit abrupt in emails but actually it's just that English isn't their first language, and the restaurant is down a narrow set of stairs so if you arrive too early it causes a traffic jam. Food is amazing.

Rustique and Ambiente fit the bill. Would give Lucia’s a miss for dinner unless you’re after 2-4-1 cocktails and a hen-do vibe; it’s much better at lunchtime!

Valentino's on the Mount. Gorgeous Italian, very reasonable and friendly service. I live here, and it's our go-to. Link below. Book in advance if you choose this. Can book online

Can I throw a few more into the mix to consider? Skosh is lovely sharing small plates, really delicious. The Rattle Owl is fantastic, too. Delrios Italian is 10/10, really atmospheric restaurant downstairs, it's brilliant. 22 Yards or Pairings are wine bars that also do lovely sharing platters.

Enjoy!

Lived in York for 4 years and Skosh is still my favourite restaurant. You do need to book well in advance but it's worth it.

Loved Nola - romantic and classy with fab food and cocktails- good value too

ivfbabymomma1 · 03/09/2023 20:02

Ambiente is lovely!!

ivegotthisyeah · 03/09/2023 20:27

Star in the city is my fav! By the river romantic and pretty

Worriedwhippet · 03/09/2023 22:31

I love Nola, I like that they do sharing plates as I can never choose.

LittleMy77 · 03/09/2023 22:39

Meltons on Bishopthorpe Rd is excellent. They do a fab v reasonably priced 5 course tasting menu, and wine pairing if you want it. Their A la carte is also great

It’s small and run by a husband and wife, and the food has always been excellent

Star in the city has a nice view and great staff but has got v expensive, imo

Ambiente is ok - i like it but not for a special meal, and the last time we went the service was well
meaning but dire

Posting as much to bookmark this thread as anything else! My mother may go up to York next month to take my student daughter out for her 21st birthday. Requirements would be an allergy-friendly venue with relatively easy access (and not too far from somewhere to park!).

Areyouasking · 03/09/2023 23:46

Another vote for Meltons, superb food.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 03/09/2023 23:49

Meltons without a doubt! I had the tasting menu and it was really nice.

HRHTheDuchessOfBotox · 03/09/2023 23:51

Another vote for Delrios.

Just placemarking, I’m going for my 30th in Jan and was going to start a similar thread!

Perfect timing OP

I am relatively local but have been searching since 5am this morning for somewhere to take a family of 5 visiting the City next weekend. They have just thrown into the mix that they are bringing a dog 😱😱😱

Does anyone know somewhere in the City that will accept dogs on a Saturday evening? I think this might be one requirement that is beyond me !!

keffie12 · 04/09/2023 10:44

You will find that it will be pub/restaurants. If you're OK with that style, Google "restaurants in York that will accept dogs." They are coming up as pub restaurants. Link below

Harkers in the same square as Betty’s (diagonally opposite) allows dogs inside.
