Meat from Aldi is always off

Has anyone else found that meat bought from Aldi is frequently off despite being well within the date shown?

I bought some chicken breasts from there and opened them for cooking and they smelt horrible so ended up getting chucked.

It’s happened before so I’ve given up buying fresh stuff from them.

All the poor people spending their hard-earned and limited cash on rotten meat but still going back for more week after week. It's a crying shame.

Confused

I was really disappointed with raspberries from Aldi.
They went to mush so quickly. Lesson learned.
I won't buy raspberries in Aldi again.

pastypants · 03/09/2023 17:28

Yes tried aldi last week... won't be go ing back everything was off before the use by dates. Asda, lidl, tesco and sainsbury's are much better .

I've had that with chicken in Tesco

Boomboom22 · 03/09/2023 17:37

From lidl yes, aldi never.

MysteriousShopper · 03/09/2023 17:49

I have never had this issue and have shopped in various Aldi and Lidl for years. Plastic-wrapped meat does smell when you first open the packet but I've never had meat that is off.

maddiemookins16mum · 03/09/2023 17:50

I’ve had one dodgy looking packet of chicken thighs from Aldi but never issues with anything else in the 18 months I’ve shopped there. I do tend to rummage at the back of the shelf though for later use by dates.

TheFormidableMrsC · 03/09/2023 18:04

I have been shopping in Aldi for years and have never experienced this.

dressedforcomfort · 03/09/2023 18:07

Yeah, I don't understand all these people who claim Aldi and Lidl have amazing bargains. I think it's a false economy. The meat I've bought has always been sub-par at best and inedible at worst. Their fruit and veg goes bad after a couple of days. I have wasted so much food buying from them. I like their yogurts and their Christmas chocolate is nice. But other than that, it's easier/cheaper to go to Tesco.

rainbowunicorn · 03/09/2023 18:09

I honestly can't believe the number if people who seem to have off food on such a regular basis. I am in my 50s, have been food shopping for my family for over 30 years and have never had off meat or fish from any supermarket. I have shopped in pretty much all of them over the years.
Same with fruit and veg, occasionally there may be a mushy strawberry or grape. The odd apple that has got bashed. Once in a while a rotten potato, onion or carrot but nothing like the amount that some people seem to experience.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/09/2023 18:09

I prefer their meat to Tesco.

I'm 40 and have had gone off meat once, and a yoghurt. Think that's it
Shop at Aldi weekly, and also use Morrisons

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/09/2023 18:15

I've had really rank meat from Tesco multiple times 🤢

ShadyPaws · 03/09/2023 13:37

Never had an issue with meat from Aldi

Nor me but I've experienced this with Tesco a couple of times recently.
My brother used to work for Tesco a few years ago and he said staff had a rota for checking fridge and freezer temperatures. If staff were off sick or away from work the checking wasn't always done diligently 😳

Tryingtokeepgoing · 03/09/2023 18:37

In my (limited) experience Tesco veg/fruit/meat is by far the worst of the mainstream supermarkets, and their fish looks so unappetising I’ve never bought it. It’s an issue as I work in a town where Tesco is the only supermarket, and while I never actually set out to shop there if I need something at lunchtime it’s the obvious choice. But I now drove 9 miles to Waitrose to avoid it.

Certainly makes you wonder because the experiences of a few posters on here are nothing like the ones in real life. My Aldi always has fresh long lasting fruit/veg and their meat is fine too 🤷‍♀️

It depends on how good the staff are at your local shop. Mine is all teenagers / early 20s and both stock rotation and customer service are abnormally poor.

I've seen a lot of veg rotting on the aisles and I've bought stir fry veg etc that's been off days before use by date. Tofu etc too.

(Lidl)

I know! I wonder if it's the same people who buy (usually Clarkes) shoes only for them to fall apart (fall apart!) a couple of days later. I have two sons at secondary school who both play football t lunchtimes and this has never happened to us, thank the lord.

43ontherocksporfavor · 03/09/2023 20:08

No, I buy meat from Aldi every single week and have done for years. I check the dates and pick up the longest date I can. Today I bought 🐥 from Morrisons and it was slimy so took it back. I’ll stick to Aldi.

theysaiditgetseasier · 03/09/2023 20:10

No I love Aldi for meat, the steaks are great

TheFairyCaravan · 03/09/2023 20:19

I buy meat, fish, fruit and vegetables from Aldi every week. I’ve never had a problem with it going off. I use stuff right on their sell by dates and it’s absolutely fine.

I sometimes wonder whether Sainsbury, Tesco et al pay people a retainer to occasionally post knocking copy about Aldi and Lidl......

I suspect you might be right.

I've shopped at Aldi for 16+ years and never had any issues. (with meat, fruit or veg)

JamieFrasersfurrysporran · 03/09/2023 20:37

I haven't been paid by Sainsbury 🤣

Saz12 · 03/09/2023 20:48

I would LOVE someone to pay me to say this... but our local Lidl is crap for meat. Quite often the fridge doors arent shut properly (they dont use the refridgerated open shelves that others around do, instead have glass fronted fridges). And the majority is processed, so might be cheaper than Tesco marinated chicken but still way more expensive than just making it yourself.
Fruit a d veg is great, but choice limited - fine if you can buy what looks nice then look up a recipe, but rubbish if youre on a budget and need to meal plan.
Tinned and dry foods are ace.
Our local Aldi is tiny and at least half of it is inflatable drills, stationary etc - the middle aisle stuff.

sezzer87 · 03/09/2023 21:24

Never had this problem ever from Aldi.
Maybe email them as it might be your local store that's the problem .

Humidititties · 04/09/2023 15:17

Just because you haven't had an issue with rotten meat doesn't mean it doesn't happen! It does happen, it's not always Aldi, but it does happen, I'm not sure what anyone has to gain by making it up
