Meat from Aldi is always off

Has anyone else found that meat bought from Aldi is frequently off despite being well within the date shown?

I bought some chicken breasts from there and opened them for cooking and they smelt horrible so ended up getting chucked.

It’s happened before so I’ve given up buying fresh stuff from them.

Presumably everyone who gets off meat reports it to the store manager and trading standards? Because you wouldn't want anyone less vigilant than you to get food poisoning, would you?

userxx · 03/09/2023 15:04

Nope, never been a problem.

Moonlight222 · 03/09/2023 15:05

I have recently, I had chicken wings from there as soon as I opened the pack the smell was awful

Why would you not take it back for a refund? Seriously why just put up with it 😕I mean why would you do that?!

I shop in Aldi and Tesco and Aldi fruit and veg is better- the Tesco extra often has gone off fruit. Sainsbury I find as good as Aldi. M&S is the best but most costly and a pain to get to.

DesteB · 03/09/2023 15:19

Never, i have never had any issues.

Sherrystrull · 03/09/2023 15:21

I think Aldi and Lidl must vary massively. The ones near us always have fruit and veg that goes bad within a day or two. However I know that that isn't everyone's experience.

EveSix · 03/09/2023 15:24

Eh? I think Curlew is on to something...

EarringsandLipstick · 03/09/2023 15:26

I've tried a number of times to shop from Lidl & Aldi.

Their fruit can be ok, but it varies. I hate their meat. Not necessarily that it's gone off but I agree re packaging & the quality / texture is poor.

I've never found the savings that others report - we don't buy much packaged or processed food, so even if I did all my shop there, I'd never get everything I need & would have to go elsewhere. I've never noticed a major price difference but I shop in a mid-price (Irish) grocery store that operates a money-off voucher scheme that takes the sting out of the price a bit.

I can buy meat from Aldi today that has an expiry of 7th of Sep. If I don’t open the pack by the 5th of Sep then it’ll be gone off. Always the case ime

doroda · 03/09/2023 15:35

Have bought a lot of meat from different Aldis over the years and it's always been fine

sunglassesonthetable · 03/09/2023 15:42

No never found that.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/09/2023 15:45

@cocksstrideintheevening ive definitely had stuff that was off from Aldi and Lidl when we lived in Denmark but then as you say I've had something borderline off from Waitrose too .

stbrandonsboat · 03/09/2023 15:47

Our Lidl is fine and the quality of the fruit and vegetables are better than in Tesco and Sainsbury's.

Gilead · 03/09/2023 15:48

Never have issues, am in the process of doing my click and collect order now.

BethDuttonsTwin · 03/09/2023 15:48

Meat from Aldi is always off, and fruit/veg is no good after two days & that is why I never bother with Aldi.

GellerYeller · 03/09/2023 15:49

We’ve found the stuff in the blister style packs- steak especially- doesn’t last till the sell by date. We’ve had a few where it gave off a very sulphurous stench. To the poster who said it’s to do with the packaging(presumably preservatives added), yes you could wait five mins to see if it subsides but it’s very off putting.

Growlybear83 · 03/09/2023 15:49

I don't buy meat from Aldi and Lidl because of the poor quality but whenever I buy fruit and vegetables I always find they go off much more quickly than Waitrose, and I don't find their fruit and vegetables generally much cheaper anyway.

Reported to Aldi, yes. Didn't take it back as it was too much effort (though they said I could) as it wasn't hideously expensive

Humidititties · 03/09/2023 15:57

Our chicken for the Sunday roast last week was off, it was from Aldi. Bought a large pack of thighs from Tesco in the week which were also off.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 03/09/2023 15:57

Nope. I shop in Aldi every week and have never known their meat go off before the sell by date.

CurlewKate · 03/09/2023 16:02

@NoWordForFluffy So you didn't do anything to stop anyone getting food poisoning? OK.

SophiaElise · 03/09/2023 16:11

I bought a pack of drumsticks from M&S yesterday and have had to chuck all of them in the bin. Don't think it's an individual supermarket thing; may be the packaging from their suppliers.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/09/2023 16:37

CurlewKate · 03/09/2023 16:02

Get over yourself.

It was a few days after I'd bought it and before the use by date. What benefit would they'd have been.

I don't give a shit that you don't believe people on this thread. You're being very odd about it all. How's your job at Aldi going?

JamieFrasersfurrysporran · 03/09/2023 16:39

Yes, I don't buy from there now

wayyour · 03/09/2023 17:17

I've never had any issues
