Does anyone remember egg curry for school dinners?!

It was a whole boiled egg in a sweet curry sauce with sultanas served with rice. It must have been back in the 1980s and unbelievably I remember liking it!

We never had it at home and I’ve never had it since so I’m not sure how common it was. Does anyone else remember it?

I do remember curry with sultanas in it. Pretty sweet and nice at the time. Could have egg in it!

neonjumper · 02/09/2023 20:41

Yes ... we had it yesterday for dinner ( at home not school) . Oh without the sultanas and put in quorn meatballs as well .

DrCoconut · 02/09/2023 20:53

I remember it but mercifully there were no sultanas.

I remember this too. No egg though.

I had it at school, back in the mid sixties. It was lovely, one of the standout school dinners. I seem to remember egg curry in a nest of mash potatoes. Sounds odd but it really was lovely.

I love egg curry. I make it quite often! Not with sultanas though.

utterflapdoodle · 02/09/2023 22:36

Not for school dinner but I remember making it in home economics class in the 80s. It was pretty disgusting from what I can recall.

Housenoob · 02/09/2023 22:38

That sounds disgusting!!

However authentic Indian egg curry (boiled eggs, peas, potatoes in a thin spicy sauce) is one of my favourite things ever. Love mashing the egg into the curry so it becomes thick, and then having it with rice. Soooo good.

You've reminded me that I haven't made egg curry for ages. Mine isn't sweet and not a sultana in sight. A thick, coconutty yellow dahl with spinach and whole hard-boiled eggs in. Yummmmm.

Please share recipes, those of you who make and enjoy egg curry 😊

Ostryga · 02/09/2023 23:57

I didn’t have it at school, but my dad used to make a curry, and on the side was cubed apple, sultanas and sliced banana.

It took years for me to not eat banana with curry 😂

My egg curry is really basic! I just fry lots of onions in coconut oil, add garlic and ginger (ready mushed), chuck curry powder in (I recommend Bolst's) add water and simmer until it's turned into a sauce. Then add halved boiled eggs and simmer for a little bit. Sometimes I halve the boiled eggs and then fry very quickly and hot in coconut oil and curry powder before I put them in the sauce. Sometimes I add spinach to the sauce just before I put the eggs in. Green beans also good.

This thread made me make an egg curry. Family were delighted!

Hawthornberry · 03/09/2023 22:33

I also made one! So simple but so nice.

SquareOne01 · 04/09/2023 09:04

I’m going to try one and hope the dc like it!
