Did anyone else watch wildly unsuitable things as a child? Was it common or accepted in that time period? I loved twin peaks and house of cards first time round and never questioned it, until I rewatched and realised I was frigging 10 when they came out. Obviously was also subjected to horror films, tbf the one that traumatised me most was at a neighbours house.

Yup! Can’t say it affected me too badly! I think we realised that it was made up and moved on! Maybe because our brains had time to recalibrate as they weren’t watching things 24/7 unlike today?

MissInterpretation · 02/09/2023 20:10

I don't know why I was allowed to watch The Young Ones as a 5 year old! Or maybe it wasn't that bad really. My favourite thing was to stay up late with my mum and watch Moonlighting. I can't remember a thing about it apart from Bruce and Sybil looking lovely.

Alycidon · 02/09/2023 20:10

I watched Tenko first time round, aged 8 - 10!

PerilTheBeryl · 02/09/2023 20:11

I watched Threads when it came out at age 11 ish I've watched it since and have no idea how I didn't get nightmares. But we also read Stephen King/James Herbert/ Richard Laymon

You must be about the same age as me

I'm nearly 50.

I've got the box set on DVD now and still enjoy watching it all the way through every couple of years.

What was the thing with ghosts that was a drama but scared the shit out of everyone? It had Sarah and Mike Green in it. I think it was shown in 1993.

Same here, I remember watching A Nightmare on Elm Street aged about 11 at a friend's house as she had her own TV/VCR in her room and her parents weren't really bothered what she watched. I don't think I was especially traumatised by it but I am no fan of horror films now and I've never felt the need to rewatch it.

GaraMedouar · 02/09/2023 20:32

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale - The Swish of the Curtain? I loved that prog! But was earlier than 1993.

I was a nightmare on elm street for me too. Apparently I would not get into the bath after that, which also lead to a very traumatic experience haha.

Ghost watch! That's it. Didn't sleep that night ...

guiltyfeethavegotnorythym · 02/09/2023 20:42

My parents took me to see Jaws when it came out at the cinema . There were a few occasions when I felt lightheaded . Hammer house of horror ( The house that bled to death) . This was in the 70's . I was in primary school , and to be honest tv and film still relatively new , so parents didn't really see the harm . They never thought ask children's thoughts .

Calistano · 02/09/2023 20:43

The lives and loves of a she devil? Tales of the unexpected. So many unsuitatable shit lol.

Had a long discussion with this, with DH as our friends are all the same and we watched anything and everything as 9 year olds.

They all agreed we are unaffected. But I disagree. I am affected. It’s taken the JOY out of horror films. I can count 3, 2, 1… jump scare happening NOW. I don’t jump, I can predict it. I know who the killer is, seen this trope before a million times zzzzz… I can see the nods to previous horror films, oh yes this was done in blah blah blah film, there will be a face in the mirror in a moment, that body isn’t dead just faking etc, the dog is going to die, that book on the bookshelf is relevant and so on.

I am robbed in a way, of all the joy of watching something with an element of surprise. I am hardened and jaded perhaps 🤣

SecretShambles · 02/09/2023 20:47

I was obsessed with twin peaks when I was 13 and also read the diary of Laura palmer... orgiew in the woods with Leo, being raped by Bob who wasn't her dad but was..... blew my little mind.

Talisin · 02/09/2023 20:49

Was there a kids party involved in that HH of H episode I’m think I remember that one

Wearegoingtoneedabiggerboat · 02/09/2023 20:52

My aunt and uncle took me to see a double bill of jaws and jaws 2 when I was around 8. We had to leave before the second one started as I was so scared. My mum couldn’t get me in the bath for weeks.
Tales of the unexpected. Especially the one when a husband chops his wife up in the bath. Again think I was staying at the same aunt and uncle who took me to see jaws. I was about 8.
There was a TV programme maybe late 70’s early 80’s about a nun, just remember a bit where the nun is in rocking chair, surprisingly watching with mum who normally hates stuff like that.

Calistano · 02/09/2023 20:52

Idk I just watched very many crazy films. It's odd because most films now are boring.

Armchair Thriller

Calistano · 02/09/2023 20:56

Jaws used to be a classic Sunday film. Scary as fuck tho

EquallyDetermined · 02/09/2023 20:58

Our teacher (primary school, aged about 10) encouraged us to watch Takes of the Unexpected. The same school film club showed Jaws in y6. Also Armchair Thriller. Can't remember the specifics of that one but I suspect it was unsuitable.
