Did anyone else watch wildly unsuitable things as a child? Was it common or accepted in that time period? I loved twin peaks and house of cards first time round and never questioned it, until I rewatched and realised I was frigging 10 when they came out. Obviously was also subjected to horror films, tbf the one that traumatised me most was at a neighbours house.

I remember on a Friday or Saturday evening there were two horror films, the first was an old black and white not so scary one and the one after was some kind of Dennis Wheatley/quite a bit of devil worship and nudity. I can't remember how old I was (am 58 now) but I'm sure it was very inappropriate yet my parents were quite happy for me to watch! 😳

What was the thing with ghosts that was a drama but scared the shit out of everyone? It had Sarah and Mike Green in it. I think it was shown in 1993.

Ghostwatch. Absolutely fucking terrifying.
The BBC got in a lot of trouble for aiming it at children.

guiltyfeethavegotnorythym · 02/09/2023 21:01

@almostoverthehill Yes that was the one .@Wearegoingtoneedabiggerboat Think that was Armchair Thriller , scary as well .

catwithflowers · 02/09/2023 21:03

Though to be fair, my scariest inappropriate 'watch' was actually a listen. It was a play in radio 4 on a Monday evening and was about a ouija board and contacting the dead. It was so bloody scary and stayed with me for years.

I also watched Tales of the Unexpected and Armchair Thriller. 😊

SM4713 · 02/09/2023 21:05

The dark crystal. I was maybe 5 and my even younger cousins would have it on whenever I visited them

Neverending story. It has some really scary and sad bits in it

The Thing. Not intentional though. I used to stay at my nans overnight sometimes. She has single beds in her room, so I'd sleep in there too. One night she fell asleep, and then this horror film came on. It gave me the creeps for years because I was only about 5

megletthesecond · 02/09/2023 21:05

Gosh yes. Life and Loves of a She Devil, I was 12.
Mum read dad the riot act when we were allowed to watch Jaws.
Too many horror films at mates houses. Can't think why I had nightmares Hmm. My teens have never had one.

Whatabouterry · 02/09/2023 21:06

A tv series called Maelstrom. Looked it up and it was 1985 so I’d have been 11. Scared me so much, I remember there being lots of dolls that were seriously creepy.

That was a live Halloween special. It was very realistic at the time. Many people were terrified by it.

DinnaeFashYersel · 02/09/2023 21:08

Dallas. Dynasty, Kenny Everett, The Young Ones, Threads, Jaws. Miss World.

Saw the lot when well under 10.

Only one TV, 4 channels and no such thing as a video recorder meant everyone watched everything when it was on.

I watched Tenko first time round, aged 8 - 10!

Me too

powershowerforanhour · 02/09/2023 21:09

Eurotrash, as young teenagers/tweenagers. My little brother and I used to watch it with thumb poised over the remote and the sound pretty low, the better to hear mum opening the kitchen door into the hallway that leads to the TV room.

ssd · 02/09/2023 21:11

We watched The Excorcist at a friend's sleepover about 13 Shock

GhostOrchid · 02/09/2023 21:13

Loads of adult things. Lives and Loves of a She Devil, Jewel in the Crown h
(not that disturbing but has some sex and weird bits that stayed with me), V (loved it) and I think it was called Out of Eden, Australian mini series about a woman attacked by a crocodile and is saved by a hunky surgeon who gives her a new face.

I think about this and I compare myself to my kids who don't watch anything unsuitable and I've noticed that as a kid I was a lot more clued up on life and knew a lot more things than my kids know, these things actually teach you a lot.

For example recently my 10 year old son asked if he can walk to school on his own, (I walked to school on my own at this age but my mum knew I had my head screwed on id watched enough child kidnappings/murders on tv to fully understand what my mum had already told me) I said no as someone might take you, he then went on to say nobody would take me on a street in daylight around all these houses. I was completely gobsmacked as I'd told him about this stuff but he seems to of not understood it. where as I think if he watched something and saw the actual horror of what it's actually like as I had done as a child he wouldn't think people only get kidnapped in the middle of nowhere!!

Bemyclementine · 02/09/2023 21:15

Twilight zone, a particular one sticks in my memory.

SplendidUtterly · 02/09/2023 21:16

Twin peaks.
Fright Night (I slept with a crucifix and the bedroom light on for a while after watching that film 😂)

SquashPenguin · 02/09/2023 21:17

Labyrinth. Amazing film but those leggings were not appropriate 😂😂😂

808KateO · 02/09/2023 21:17

Not long after Channel 4 started they had a season of adult-only programmes that displayed a constant red warning triangle in the corner of the screen, so naturally they were the talk of the playground. Vaguely recall one being about a VD clinic.

GhostOrchid · 02/09/2023 21:19

Also Shogun! Actual beheading in the first episode.

Watched all these with my mum.

BlueThursday · 02/09/2023 21:19

My dad actually rented Nightmare on Elm Street for me on video when I was 5!

bizarrely it didn’t bother me but I was shit scared of the Yorkshire tv logo 🙈

ToastyCrumpets · 02/09/2023 21:20

I remember a sleepover for my friend’s 13th birthday - so we were all 12 or 13 at the time.

Videos included:
Silence of the Lambs
Child’s Play
A Nightmare on Elm Street

Can’t remember what else, but all in that genre.

I’m still not quite sure what her parents were thinking…

I watched The Exorcist a few nights ago because we see the trailer for the one that's out next month. Forgot how scary it is!

Northernsouloldies · 02/09/2023 21:25

Lynne perrie(Ivy Tilsley) of corrie fame, interview on the Word real car crash stuff.

my82my · 02/09/2023 21:31

I also remember being really young around 5 (so around 1986) There was an advert with a teenage girl hooked up to a life support machine and the message was DONT SNIFF GLUE!! It freaked me out so much, I remember trying to not breathe in while using pricstic. 😂😂

Also all the AIDS adverts. I didn't really understand but knew it was bad. The advert with the grave diggers made me think you caught it from eating mud. I remember trying to replay every mud pie l had ever made, convinced at some point I probably had. A little girl in my class died of Aids.. She was only 7 and there were always assemblies talking about it. Seems abit much for primary school children.
