Did anyone else watch wildly unsuitable things as a child? Was it common or accepted in that time period? I loved twin peaks and house of cards first time round and never questioned it, until I rewatched and realised I was frigging 10 when they came out. Obviously was also subjected to horror films, tbf the one that traumatised me most was at a neighbours house.

I had a huge sleepover for my 11th birthday and my mum rented Dirty dancing for all of us and pizza 😳they were amazing days though

Iwouldlovetohavecheekbones · 02/09/2023 22:07

Also watched a lot of Dallas, Dynasty & Knots landing at a very young age

Crazymadchickenlady · 02/09/2023 22:07

Tales of the unexpected where they chop someone’s fingers off gave me nightmares for weeks

LER83 · 02/09/2023 22:13

I watched loads of inappropriate things as a child/teen. Horror films have never bothered me. I remember renting pet sematry for my 13th birthday and wondering why the other girls were crying and telling me to turn it off! I'd already read the book and seen the film! The only thing I remember being truly terrified of were the Darleks in Dr Who! Also my fear of spiders probably stems from watching arachnophobia at the cinema when I was 8!

Iwouldlovetohavecheekbones · 02/09/2023 22:15

I was so scared of The Triffids, going to Google how old I was when that came out, I used to sit with my mum and watch it..wtf 🙈

Clarabe1 · 02/09/2023 22:15

I am a 70s/80s child. Disaster and horror films were very ‘in’, the threat of nuclear war hung over us and if that didn’t unnerve you there was the constant stream of government warnings which usually involved electrocution, chip pan fires, strangers offering to show you their puppies, drowning, followed by being going head first through the windscreen and being set on fire. Bring on the 80s and we added AIDS to the mix.
I think I am incapable of being scared by anything on the TV.

Oh God us too, we used to have the biscuit barrel in front of us watching people being devoured by plants. Mind boggling how our parents allowed it

Iwouldlovetohavecheekbones · 02/09/2023 22:16

I was 4 when I watched The day of the Triffids (think it was called that) how bad is that?!

Twizbe · 02/09/2023 22:17

Monty Python and The Young Ones. I was allowed to watch them whenever I wanted (we had them on VHS) tbf A LOT went right over my head.

808KateO · 02/09/2023 22:18

@Iwouldlovetohavecheekbones Oh god Day of the Triffids was terrifying.

The one I really wish I hadn't watched as a kid was Threads.

SprinkleOfSunak · 02/09/2023 22:21

I remember watching the following when my Mum fell asleep in the armchair:

The Word
Carnal Knowledge
Eurotrash
Loads of soft porn film on channel 4
Practically any programme about sex

guiltyfeethavegotnorythym · 02/09/2023 22:21

Even as a child I used to gag at my parents watching Benny Hill .

Ifulikepinacoladas · 02/09/2023 22:26

I watched Eastenders from the first episode age 8. Apparently I announced that I would be going on the pill, because Sharon was 😳Parents still didn't stop me watching it. So went on to learn about prostitutes, murder, oh and the Wilmot Brown rape age 10/11!

Triffids scared the life out of me too. Plus the creepy Maelstrom series featuring freaky dolls. Every time that was one my mum had an evening class to go to which made it doubly scarey.

I think we had the Death Wish films on pirate video and I saw them at a stupid young age. Literally there was no censorship in my house.

GCAcademic · 02/09/2023 22:27

I watched The Accused at a friend’s house when we were 13. That was the first time I’d seen any kind of sexual content in a film. I was traumatised.

Newgolddream70 · 02/09/2023 22:37

Back in the 80s, my Dad would go to the local pub on Friday nights with a couple of his mates and Mum, sister and I would be at home. We were allowed a glass of Coca-Cola on these nights and watched Whatever Happened to The Likely Lads and Not The Nine O'Clock News. I used to laugh at NTNON, mainly because Rowan Atkinson pulled funny faces; the majority of the jokes went over my head of course. I would go round the house singing 'I like truckin, I like truckin, I like truckin and I like to truck'! 🙈

Also, it wasn't until quite recently that it dawned on me that the line in Cool for Cats by Squeeze about giving the dog a bone had nothing to do with canines and their snacks!

I remember being terrified of an episode of Strange but True. Can't recall much details, just some freaky figure in a hood.

Also recall mum coming back from work when I was in the infants. I was home with dad on a sick day and he let me watch Poltergeist! She hit the roof.

EconomyClassRockstar · 02/09/2023 22:45

My parents were really strict about what I was allowed (no Dallas in our house!) but I was 100% allowed to watch Day of the Triffids and Tales of the Unexpected. I loved both but they absolutely terrified me!

EconomyClassRockstar · 02/09/2023 22:47

I will forever remember the TofU where the guy tries to escape from prison by pretending to be dead and the plan is the undertaker digs him up. But turns out the dead guy IS the undertaker.

Aworldofmyown · 02/09/2023 22:55

I remember watching V, I wasn't even 5 years old 😯

EconomyClassRockstar · 02/09/2023 22:57

And as a teenager, I would watch Network 7 on Ch 4 every Sunday until they asked Ben Vol-au-Vent Wotsit (or whatever his name was from Curiosity Killed the Cat) how old he was when he started masturbating and my Dad banned it from that day on because he "didn't want to listen to that kind of nonsense while he was trying to read the Sunday papers". I miss my Dad!

powershowerforanhour · 02/09/2023 23:06

The Young Ones, Bottom and Benny Hill were considered harmless in our house.
Also used to watch bits of Dallas, Dynasty, Howards Way and Butterflies when mum was watching them. I didn't get the point of Butterflies at all, I couldn't understand why Ria was dripping around being agonised the whole time, I thought the sons were funny though. Iiked the music and the opening credits of Howards Way- sunlight on the sea and white sails against blue sky was a glamorous world away from the dark, wet, landlocked place I'm from.

Alycidon · 02/09/2023 23:07

Fellow Tenko fans - if you haven't already come across it, I highly recommend the book 'Remembering Tenko' by Andy Priestner.

Soapyspuds · 02/09/2023 23:09

The irony being most of these examples are less harmful that the shit kids find these days on tiktok or whatever they use.

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale - The Swish of the Curtain? I loved that prog! But was earlier than 1993.

I got the book for Christmas. It was awesome.
