Sorry for TMI - but if you get 'period digestion' have you found anything that helps?

I always get diarrhoea at the start of my period. Is there anything to be done to ward this off or prevent it, or is it just yet another fun and loveable facet of menstruating every month for 33 years and counting? Thanks.

I have IBS that is triggered by my menstural cycle so get diarrhoea around ovulation and in the lead up to and first couple of days of my period. My GP recommended taking preventative Imodium (1 tablet initially and then 1 after any very loose stools but 1 tends to be enough in total) on the cycle days it is at its worst and it’s been really helpful for me. Might be worth checking with a pharmacist / your GP if similar would be suitable for you .

I've had a really horrid grotty period this week and an awful upset stomach for nearly 3 days with it. I've been taking Buscopan as it stops the cramping from both. I'm 53 and am so over having periods.

Thanks both. I think I'll buy some tablets. You get into the mindset of thinking 'it's a period, of course it's unpleasant' but actually why not make it a bit less unpleasant with medication? I take paracetamol for period pains so I have no idea why immodium never occured to me.

I think it’s because as you say we’re so used as women to putting up with horrible symptoms because they’re related to our periods.

I was talking to my GP about how disruptive I found the diarrhoea I got during my period with work and she basically said that I was being too hard on myself trying to just cope and soldier on, and that if I needed permission to take the medication to deal with the symptoms then she gave it to me. It would be different if I was taking Imodium everyday obviously but now I don’t feel bad about taking 3 or 4 a month to manage, it definitely makes me feel more in control.

I hate the period poos. I tried Imodium but it then made me constipated which was horrible. I do take buscopan though which helps.

Yes I get it for one or two days, not as loose as diarrhoea so I never thought of Imodium
