Digital footprint online - not showing face?

Hey MNers!

I’m not even pregnant yet but DH and I are very aware of digital footprint and the importance of it, and beginning to think about some of our parenting choices and preferences to make sure we are both on the same page.

What do you do when it comes to deciding what info to share? Do you post pictures as normal, or not post/hide face? We only really have family and friends on our profiles but I’m concerned about the internet and how nothing is really private, plus children have no way of consenting to pictures of their faces being shared on the internet.

Is it also better to not reveal their name, and just refer to them via initial or a nickname? I’d be interested to hear what others have chosen x

We don't post any photos, names or aby other information. There's no need. If you want send people photos just email them, WhatsApp/Signal/text, or print them off!

I post photos and names. I see no reason not to.

No point going through life being paranoid.

Stripeypyjamas · 01/09/2023 16:18

We don't post any pics at all. It's not about being paranoid it's about it not being my image to share. If my DC choose to share photos when they're adults then that's up to them but I doubt they'll want their entire lives document r on my Facebook without their consent.

I don't use social media much at all these days, but I've never posted anything at all about my DD on it. If she wants to, then she can, but I'm not forcing an everlasting digital footprint on her.

thecatsthecats · 01/09/2023 16:48

No images posted online for us.

I'm a data protection and cyber security professional, and my mum was a journalist who used us freely in her works.

So yeah, no pictures.

MrsRetriever · 01/09/2023 17:02

I post pictures but they’re usually quite arty / back of head (I know…) & I don’t have my or their names on anything, or a profile picture with my face in it, so that’s enough for me.

If my DC ever indicate they’re uncomfortable with this then I will stop immediately.
