Edinburgh university

DC can go for free, considering whether is worth going to an English uni (not Oxbridge) and paying the fees. Science course. What English universities would you consider Edinburgh equivalent to in standing and would it be worth the additional cost? I know courses vary but one factor is if DC changed course (which I did at uni) so wondering about general option overall.

Thanks. These rankings seem to differ so much in terms of the weightings applied to different factors. I was wondering about how it was generally perceived at large.

I'm probably biased as I live in Edinburgh, but it is a very good university!

So do we which is part of the issue - going to Edinburgh means not getting halls and potential missing out on some of the growing-up experience that uni provides.
is it worth missing the fees?

And both DH and I went to Edinburgh Uni (and stuck around) so I don’t think we have an unbiased clarity of thought on the subject

Why is “standing” so important?

people with degrees from other than the so called “top” universities can still manage to get decent jobs and pursue good careers. I don’t get the obsession with this kind of thing on this site.

Because in a very competitive world, the standing of a uni can make a difference, sometimes a huge one, in terms of employability.

My daughter about to start sciences at edinburgh and has got halls, despite us being an EH postcode?

CurlewKate · 03/09/2023 01:39

Edinburgh is very highly thought of. Most people would leap at the chance of going there for free!

Has he considered St Andrews? Also very highly thought of, and I think with higher student satisfaction.

DS2 is at Edinburgh Uni, he seems to be having a good experience although it was more about living in Edinburgh for him rather than the University itself.

I don't think it scores as high as others on student welfare/satisfaction however.

My daughter is in uni and living at home. It isn't the worst thing in the world, if you give him leeway to bring friends home, and stay over with friends. He can do a year abroad, on the Erasmus replacement or other exchange, and get more independence that way.

Or he could move into a share house with other students in Edinburgh, though most likely for 2nd year once he's made friends.

Patchesofdrizzle · 03/09/2023 03:57

Forgot to mention that he could move into private uni halls even though he's living in Edinburgh, as they're fully commercial but has the full student experience, though may tend to international students.
