How often do you eat ham?

I don’t eat much meat but I do like ham and with all the focus on ultra processed foods I am wondering if I eat too much. I buy a pack about once a fortnight and eat it over a few days (but I would only eat bacon or sausages about once a year!)

I also read this week that wholemeal bread is ultra processed so can I still enjoy a ham sandwich and a cup of tea which is one of my favourite things to have for lunch?!

I would have said my diet was fairly balanced and healthy but I’m questioning everything I eat now.

People have been eating ham sandwiches for decades if not centuries I'm sure you'll be fine

InterFactual · 31/08/2023 21:33

Tim Spector has a lot to answer for, he's a snake oil salesman.

Just eat the sandwich. Bread was good enough for Jesus, it'll do for me.

I'm not sure the bread that Jesus ate could be considered the same as the stuff sold in supermarkets nowadays. There is a lot of research, not just from Tim Spector, to suggest that Ultra Processed Foods are harmful to health.

There is ham and ham. What quality and quantity are you eating?

Packet bread is a pretty grim product, certainly.

Notlongnow01 · 31/08/2023 21:44

I like Tesco finest ham, dry not slimy ham.

Never because I hate the stuff. Love bacon and Sausages though.

Rummikub · 31/08/2023 21:47

I buy ham as a change from cheese as tuna is so expensive and doesn’t stretch very far.

I think every time I should get something less processed.

When you read the ingredients on bread there’s a vast difference in Ingredients. The longer life ones have a longer list.

Never, UPF

JamSandle · 31/08/2023 21:50

Very occasionally.

I fell in love with pigs and really struggle to eat it without picturing a pigs face.

OhcantthInkofaname · 31/08/2023 21:58

I eat ham everyday!

Popcorn640 · 31/08/2023 22:05

Misread as how often do you eat HIM and was expecting something quite different. As you were.

greenacrylicpaint · 31/08/2023 22:07

this upf stuff is overrated a load of nonsense

ham everynow and then is fine.
bread is fine
as long as that's not all you eat it's absolutely not an issue.

eat. not too much. mostly plants.

JobMatch3000 · 31/08/2023 22:09

Pretty much every weekday I eat a ham salad for lunch. As PP, I buy "quality" meat, not Bernard Matthews type.

The UPF debate has been going on for years. I'm in my mid-40s and I remember asking my Dad in the supermarket if we could get the sliced ham with the "egg" in the centre. Even back then he refused because it was not "real food".

StopStartStop · 31/08/2023 22:11

Never. No ham, no pork, no bacon, no shellfish. Accidentally ate pork gelatine last week (Marks and Spencer again. I should know never to eat without reading the packaging).

wenton · 31/08/2023 22:13

I used to buy it every week, but stopped when I read about the risk of cancer and processed meat (which is different from the UPF issue). I've substituted it with sliced chicken now, though I still eat it with sliced bread.

80sMum · 31/08/2023 22:13

I haven't eaten ham for over 15 years, ditto bacon, and I only eat sausages rarely, usually at Christmas.

JamMakingWannaBe · 31/08/2023 22:14

Do M&S Percy Pigs count as ham?

43ontherocksporfavor · 31/08/2023 22:14

Never eat ham- so expensive for decent stuff. Try hummus

NeedTheSeaside · 31/08/2023 22:14

Not in over 35 years.

but I'm vegetarian. I cannot imagine eating it.

However, if that wasn't the case I'd eat ham. I seem to remember quite enjoying a ham & mustard sandwich. I'd be more likely to have fresh bakers bread & ham. Than cheap white with a different filling.

HRHTheDuchessOfBotox · 31/08/2023 22:15

I was in Waitrose and genuinely heard someone tell their partner to go to the chiller section and get some naice ham.

TenOhSeven · 31/08/2023 22:16

I have ham sandwiches a few times a week. I've got to die of something, so I might as well enjoy my lunch.

Notlongnow01 · 31/08/2023 22:17

I usually have it with mustard and salad.

I buy the nitrite free prosciutto from Lidl. Ingredients: pork, salt.

WhisperingHi · 31/08/2023 22:17

What you eat is completely up to you.

Ham is ultra processed and not healthy. But that's ok. I don't think anyone eats healthy all the time. It's totally your choice.

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/08/2023 22:18

Once every 3/4 weeks. Avoid smoked ham.
