How much cash for wedding present?

Going to wedding on Saturday. Lovely young couple, we have known the groom for quite a few years, and we are invited to the sevice and meal afterwards. They want money as a gift, not presents, which is fine, but how much to give? Two other friends going say they are giving £50. Is that enough, or a bit mean? Really don't know, it's been so long since we went to a wedding!

I'm going to say £35 per head so £70.
If I was going alone I think I'd give £40.

Laneymoo · 31/08/2023 19:41

Very much depends where you're from! The going rate in Ireland is €100 a head so €200 for a couple.

Clawdy · 31/08/2023 19:56

Not sure I could afford quite as much as that, Laneymoo ! Interesting though.

Oh I hear ya! Exact reason why I've said no to two other weddings this year, it's madness.

UndercoverCop · 31/08/2023 20:01

I went to one earlier this year on my own, it was a uni friend, those of us staying together (air BnB) all chipped in £50 per head, there were five of us

MorningOclock · 31/08/2023 20:02

It really varies but I would say £50 per person is what a lot do

MorningOclock · 31/08/2023 20:02
  • per person attending
Lauren83 · 31/08/2023 20:02

We do £100 as a couple

FlorenceTheFerocious · 31/08/2023 20:03

I haven't been to a wedding in ages sadly (I love weddings). But I used to do £100 from dh and me, so £50 each.

Lyricallie · 31/08/2023 20:03

Usually do £100 from the two of us if we’re all day guests. Evening guests just a card and a nice bottle of wine.

SoSad44 · 31/08/2023 20:04

£50 each seems good, so £100

Matchinglipsandfingertips · 31/08/2023 20:04

I hate this request.
I think £50 is enough but it's rude imo.

lemonyaid · 31/08/2023 20:04

£40 is the minimum for 1 person on their own I'd say - 2 x£20.

If its two people then I'd go for £60 minimum.

If you can't give that much then I'd not give anything and perhaps get a frame instead.

tescocreditcard · 31/08/2023 20:05

£100 a couple.

Blanketpolicy · 31/08/2023 20:06

If I knew someone well enough to be invited to the full day it would be at least £100. Family probably more. But it depends on your personal circumstances too.

2chocolateoranges · 31/08/2023 20:08

We do £50 for a full day wedding and £30 for evening guests only.

weddings cost enough with having to get there, possibly stay over, new outfits etc.

dh and I went to a wedding last year, he was an usher and between our outfits, stag do, overnight stay, drinks and gift we spent approx £1000! £50 gift was given.

Hollyppp · 31/08/2023 20:10

£100 as a couple for good friends.

would probably do £80 if vague friends.

Babyenroute · 31/08/2023 20:11

We usually spend about £150 per couple

MerryMarigold · 31/08/2023 20:17

I think it depends how much you spend generally on things. If you've spent 150 on a new outfit, 50 quid having hair done etc then I think you should spend more on the gift than what you look like.

I disagree. If you've had to spend lots on a fancy outfit due to their dress code then you should pay less as a gift

Snugglemonkey · 31/08/2023 20:29

We do £100 a head. I am Irish. I don't live there, but that just feels like the right amount.

I don’t think having your hair done is your gift to the couple lol

Hair is a choice I agree but If dress code specifies and you haven't got anything that meets it I think its fair

Depends how well I/we know the couple or how much we like them, but otherwise it's usually this, £50 or £30.

QueSyrahSyrah · 31/08/2023 20:45

Depends on your circumstances, their circumstances, how much attending has cost you, lots of variables.

I've given £75 Honeymoon spends (from a couple) when we'd travelled to a wedding abroad, but also £200 (from a couple) at a very simple wedding near home when the couple were saving hard for a house.
