Cardiff uni accommodation

Son is off to Cardiff uni next month which is great news.

Unfortunately we have heard today that he hasn't got a hall place. Thought he was guaranteed one but Unfortunately he didn't apply in time, so we're now at the mercy of the private sector.

Does anyone have any tips or hints please? From the email we had from the accommodation office, even private rentals are in short supply.

Ask about waiting list. DD started 2 years ago and was in uni house that didn't work out. She managed to move to halls after about a week having realised there were empty rooms. She had found out the exact date they would accept applications for swaps and made sure she applied first thing that day. The original house was owned by the uni, obviously if you had signed a private contract you probably couldn't swap so to follow this plan you might have to get something temporary and hope you got a space.

Are you in the Facebook group Parents of Students at Cardiff University? It's quite active so there might be people on there who have some ideas.

At every university there will be some people who drop out in the first few weeks of the first term. So I would look at whether you can find your DS some form of short-term accommodation, eg a room in an Airbnb. If you can find something to tide you over for the first 2-3 weeks of term, I bet some student accommodation will become available.
