Looking forward to autumn thread

I've just got back from a trip to a not very sunny or warm Ireland to visit family. I'd convinced myself that when I grew up there, my seasonal allergies and ridiculously dramatic reaction to insect bites didn't exist. Thought it was living in a warm part of the UK that did it. Alas, this illusion was shattered when I went back to Ireland and got eaten by mosquitos/midges and had godawful hayfever the whole time.

I know summer hasn't been great and I love the hot weather, but it clearly hates me 😂. Next summer I'll be spending less time outdoors which is just sad.

Anyway, it's nearly autumn, so I thought I'd start an autumn appreciation thread to cheer myself up.

I've bought a new candle to enjoy in colder weather and I'm about to do a big clean of the house ready for indoor entertaining. Also will do some batch cooking over the weekend if I have time.

Anyone else looking forward to autumn?

I'm surprised this thread hasn't been bombarded by the cosy snuggly hot chocolate brigade yet Grin

Awaits in anticipation

LunaNorth · 31/08/2023 10:22

There’s a definite tang in the air, and there was mist above the fields this morning.

I feel a re-read of Keats coming on. I drag it out once a year…

”Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness…”

TimeForBedSaidZebadee · 31/08/2023 22:19

I love autumn,

It's the season where I can wear the clothes that suit me best.

The air smells fresher, the trees look beautiful.

It's not so hot that I sweat but not so cold that I shiver.

And Christmas, I can start to get excited about planning Christmas without my family thinking I'm a complete nutter.

FlorenceTheFerocious · 31/08/2023 22:25

Aha some posts!

I am also getting excited about Christmas. I've even booked a Christmas day out! Need to spread out the costs this year, so this will a good thing

Yup! Two months to Halloween, the most wonderful time of the year! And it's nearly my birthday. I love love love autumnal colours and smells. I bought some pumpkin scented soaps today. I love autumn. 😊

noodlezoodle · 01/09/2023 02:24

Not to brag, but where I live we get autumn stuff accompanied by the nicest weather of the year. It's absolutely perfect and I can't wait!

Iloveburgerswaymorethanishould · 01/09/2023 03:27

I went into two well known bargain shops yesterday… all the Halloween/autumn decorations are out!! Scarecrow door wreaths, big orange and red flower displays, candles, pumpkins etc. made me feel quite “cosy”. Came home and started mentally rearranging my living room ready to place a Xmas tree etc. Autumn and spring are definitely my favourite seasons!!!
And yes, I was also planning where to put the hot chocolate station this year 😂😂😂

Xeren · 01/09/2023 11:46

I love Autumn! It’s my favourite season.

I love seeing the leaves change colour and Halloween.

I take September to be the start of Autumn, even though September is always warm.

Pumpkin scented candles, boozy hot chocolates and a few scary movies 😱

autumnlights · 02/09/2023 07:38

I love all things autumn 🍂
I love walking out in the country and seeing all the beautiful colours.
I love watching seasons change, I find it fascinating and gives me a sort of nostalgia. This late summer stage when it's still summer but autumn starts to creep in is my favourite because it's the start of the 'ber' months.

NeverGuessWho · 02/09/2023 08:05

I need to join this thread. September is usually a magnificent month.

Excitingnewusername · 02/09/2023 08:33

I hadn't been looking forward to autumn this year, which is odd for me, but I think it was the never ending rain and dark greyness this summer since the June heatwave. It's now beautiful here. Slight nip in the cool air, of a currently blue sky and sunny. Perfect weather for me.

Our house also just really suits autumn somehow, and never feels right in summer (not due to decor, the house itself; bog standard Northern terrace).

I started some garden tidying last weekend (and made a dead hedge as I went, for the insects to over winter in peace), and will hopefully get some winter bedding plants bought and in today to fill in the gaps in the front yard.

I'd like to like summer, and I love all the extra light in the days and the greenery, but it doesn't like me (or DH so we get quite fractious).

I am the rare creature who loves autumn but doesn’t like pumpkin-scented anything or hot chocolate! But I do love:

wearing autumn clothes. Just feel so much comfier in my ‘signature’ look of skirts, jumper, tights and boots

not sweating in the muggy heat, worse this year as having to wear waterproof jackets when going to work

candles flickering

the evenings and mornings getting darker. I don’t know why I feel so exposed in summer when the days are so long

the tv - when Bake Off starts and there’s usually good dramas on

cooking/baking eating my favourite comfort foods - pies, crumbles, stews etc

weekend walks are more enjoyable when the air is fresher. Especially when they end with a roast in a nice country pub

we moved house this year and are surrounded by beautiful countryside so I’m really excited for walks and for Xmas coming and to decorate 🥰

FlorenceTheFerocious · 02/09/2023 09:34

I'm really looking forward to making autumn food too.

I might make something autumnal tomorrow. It's September so I think it's crumble time.

I like summer too, but the hayfever and insect bites get me every year. The crap weather didn't seem to stop either of those!

My candle is bay and rosemary. I do like pumpkin spice too though.

I want to do some autumn crafts too to decorate the house a little bit. Need to declutter some more first though

Autumn is my favourite season too despite some negative associations with starting the new school year. I like feeling the change in the air & it just makes me feel nostalgic.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/09/2023 11:00

@LunaNorth , in this house it’s ‘Season of mists and mellow soupfulness…’.
Lots of lovely, thick, (cheap!) multi veg ones, once there’s a nip in the air. Red lentils/pearl barley/orzo pasta often added. A substantial minestrone with a tin of kidney or other beans added goes down v well, too.

DustyLee123 · 02/09/2023 11:01

You’re a bit late, we had an autumn thread last month !

I'd say an autumn thread in august is early rather than an autumn thread at the start of september being late 😜

I love autumn too. I like all seasons for what they are but there's something special about autumn. I like all parts, the start of autumn just after the equinox right through to the solstice.
I love the changing colours and the cooler temperatures. There's something lovely about cooking in the slow cooker, lamps on in the living room and conservatory when the night draw in and bringing some autumn colours in to the home.

FlorenceTheFerocious · 02/09/2023 13:36

I just had a pumpkin spice latte and it was delicious. I don't always like them, but this was a good 'un.

I agree there is something particularly special about autumn 🍂. It feels a little bit magical to me.

I love autumn, it's my favourite season. But the weather today and forecast for next week is firmly summer territory. The candles can wait a few weeks.

menopausalmare · 02/09/2023 13:45

Fungi,🍄🍄🍄Such beautiful fungi in the woods.

SapphireSeptember · 10/09/2023 01:31

@Desecratedcoconut This weather has upset me. I bought some proper puddings to have with custard and it's too hot to eat them. 🥺 It was nice on my birthday as it was sunny, breezy and not too hot, but this is ridiculous!

But, nice apples are in the shops! I like to buy seasonal fruit and vegetables as much as possible, and I love apples in the autumn.
