Great North Run - logistic tips

I am doing the GNR - I have never done a proper race before. Training has gone to plan (so far!) and I have read all the official stuff that has been sent to me.

But I’m still feeling woefully unprepared about things. I don’t know what those things are! If I had to get up and run 13.1 miles, I’d be ok - I know what to eat/drink, I know what I’ll wear etc. But it is the transport, the toilets, the finish, spectator plans - all that stuff that I feel clueless about. And there will be things that I don’t even know that I don’t know…

Aiming for about 2:30-2:40 finish time, staying near Tynemouth and getting the metro in. My friend is coming with me to support and plans on picking me up at the finish in the car to head home.

So what do you think I need to know?

Thank you!

It’s by far the best race I’ve ever done. Very emotional as the crowds are great and I’m a back of the pack runner. It’s not a competitive run, more of a fun run for serious runners.

just after the bridge is the steepest hill of the race but last time a lady gave me an ice pop so it was good. People give food and snacks all the way along. One year I got given a slice of pizza at mile 11 ish.

Steep down hill at mile 12 and then left along the seafront. DO NOT be tempted to sprint the seafront because you can see the finish line. It’s a mile away so pace yourself accordingly.

Thank you so much everyone, and for all the latest posts which I have read but not individually responded to.

I’m relieved I won’t be finishing on my own, thank you for that reassurance.

However in this heat I think any expectations are out of the window!

I have proper excited nerves! I promise to update, but it may be much later tomorrow as I forgot my phone charger so may run out of battery!

Thanks again for everyone taking the time to reply ❤️🏃‍♀️

Have a great one.

And please please please do not worry about times. Its the thief of enjoyment and you are amazing to just be doing it. You are trumping every one of us still sat on the couch!

I'm very envious. It was by far my most enjoyable half marathon.

@HippyDays I'm about 4 miles from the finish line now - lovely afternoon and might be a bit cooler tomorrow.

Take your time, drink at every water station and enjoy the atmosphere.... when the red arrows go over the noise is deafening, and you'll
Never forget the experience.

@HippyDays hope you had a great day - and you had finished before the storms!

For anyone else who was there - you too!

Took us over 2 hours to get out of the car park due to the storms and floods- now heading out in search of food... campsite is a lake....

It's our 1st wet GnR so I guess we were due...

HippyDays · 10/09/2023 21:02

What a day!!!!

Getting out was a nightmare as the metro on the south side of the river shut due to flooding, so everyone had to get the ferry. The rain was torrential, but I finished before it started fortunately.

I finished, I survived, I’m smiling, and I did it in 2:43 according to my watch. I LOVE my medal!

Need to find some food and get home, so I’ll do a full update tomorrow, but wanted to check in quickly as I’m so grateful for everyone’s good wishes.

Well done @HippyDays

Absolute shocker that the metro had to close, it must have been mayhem!!

brownsauce · 11/09/2023 10:28

It was an absolute disaster at the end with all of the rain! I had to move my team away from all of the medal stations incase of lightning! Well done on your time, it was a really rough day in that heat!

ihavespoken · 11/09/2023 15:55
