Skoda superb estate DSG driver here too, best car I've ever had by a long shot. Total luxury to drive.

I don't know what age you are but before my hrt kicked it the cooling seats were great, that cool air blowing along my back was bliss, I was tempted to lie across the rear seat to get full benefits of it!!! You're right about the drive, it's just lovely.

DanielsDancingMonkey · 31/08/2023 11:48

I had the previous Peugeot 807 and it was great. Not as luxurious as a Mercedes V class, though.

hattie43 · 31/08/2023 22:39

I have the Audi Q5 and love it . It feels substantial and drives beautifully. I love it because it's a quality car but not flash .

MrsRoxkwell · 01/09/2023 06:15

Thanks all! I’ve booked a test drive with Volvo for an xc60! Going to try and get some drives in with a few of the other suggestions too :)

Audi Q5 or BMW ix3

Land Rover very comfortable but the sat nav software is horrible.

Insist on a drive before any discussions - it's normally the first thing you do, otherwise wasting everyone's time.

Shade17 · 04/09/2023 12:07

I’d advise an Audi/VW/Skoda/Seat as they are all from the same group and fairly easy to repair but very reliable.

They’re not really any better than average for reliability. Skoda tend to come highest, a bit better than average with Audi the worst, well below average. None of these brands come anywhere close to Toyota/Lexus which really are “very reliable”

MrsSlocombesCat · 04/09/2023 12:28

The first three will automatically make people think you’re a twat. Are any of these choices electric or at least hybrid?

cakeandteajustforme · 04/09/2023 12:35

Shade17 · 30/08/2023 10:52

So relaxing as it is so quiet and no engine vibration, acceleration which is probably better than the macan turbo…

LOL! It won’t even come close to the performance of a Macan Turbo.

You've clearly never driven an EV

Roselilly36 · 04/09/2023 12:39

We have had Landrover Discovery sport, very disappointing build quality would have another or recommend. Also had x trail, built like a tank, was a good car. Now we have Peugeot third car in now, 3008 is a great car, also had a 2008, and 307 all excellent cars.

Toyota RAV4.

I have one, and can fit 2 adults ( 1 slightly above average height and 1 very tall) and 3 teens (1 very tall, 1 average height, and 1 slightly small for now, but about to grow!) in comfortably. Boot is big enough - I had an XC90 before this, and can fit the things I fitted into that in the RAV4 ok. This includes (regularly): 2 full size cellos, 2 guitars, plus assorted school bags, cricket bags, and general sport gear for the aforementioned 3 teens! The RAV4 has a good size, easily accessible boot. I have a hybrid, and get an average of 54mpg, which is a very welcome change from my XC90 (which was not electric/hybrid, and got about 30mpg). The general running and servicing costs are also vastly reduced. I drive a LOT and needed new tyres every year with my Volvo - I’ve had my rav4 for 18 months now and only now need 2 new tyres (45,000 miles in that time). Likewise brakes - needed attention a lot on my Volvo, haven’t needed replacing on my Rav. Plus general dealer servicing costs are lower too - average £250 a service with Toyota, was far more with Volvo (mostly because something always needed replacing)

VenusClapTrap · 04/09/2023 13:10

Agree with pps that you’ll miss the boot space moving from an estate to an SUV.

SabrinaThwaite · 30/08/2023 11:45

That’s why they say if you want to go into th desert - take a Land Rover. If you want to come back again - take a Toyota.

So true! Two years teaching in Botswana driving the school Hilux through dry and not so dry rivers converted me to Toyotas.

We have a RAV PHEV and love it.

Bluevelvetsofa · 04/09/2023 13:53

Skodas have large boot space.

None of them. I'm a Skoda fan though. I've had a few Octavia's and now have a Superb Estate. They were all reliable comfortable and stylish. I have always gone for the L&K (Lauren and Klement) model but even the base models of Skoda are good. The car I have now is great, dgs gearbox, full leather, all safety features, seats a bit like myself, they blow hot and cold, it's 4x4, the leg room is incredible and the boot is massive which I love because I go camping. I've even folded the seats down and put my camping mattress in and slept in it when the weather was too bad to erect the tent. It really depends on your requirements, I don't need a 7 seater, seldom have passengers, need boot space and due to a chronic illness need the car to be automatic for long distances. I considered an Audi A6 and test drove one on the same day as the Skoda but found the Skoda far more comfortable and nicer to drive. I think make a list of what you need/want and work from that.

Yes agree! I've got the Yeti though they don't make them anymore.

CalmDownBoris72 · 04/09/2023 14:00

Another vote for a Volvo, I have an xc90 but I think it’s too big for a family of 4 (we have 100% more kids than you OP), I think the xc60 would be perfect. We have a PI hybrid and do use to electric for around town etc but I like the back up of petrol for the longer journeys we do.

@MrsSlocombesCat - why?

You've clearly never driven an EV

I’ve driven plenty thanks. I’m also capable of looking up actual figures. EVs normally have an advantage of being quick off the mark, so the 0-50km/h is quite a good metric for comparing an EV with an ICE car. I’ll tell you now for a fact that a Macan Turbo is significantly quicker 0-50km/h than the iX3, something like 1.5s vs 2.5s from memory. After that the gulf just opens up, the 1/4 mile time is something like 2.5s difference which is HUGE gulf. By the time an iX3 is doing 100km/h the Macan is already doing more than 130km/h.

The iX3 is disappointingly slow for an EV thanks to its modest power output and 2wd. The iX however, is a different kettle of fish - the 40 is quite quick, the 60 is ballistic.

faban · 04/09/2023 17:02

I have the jag E pace. The f felt too big for me. I do really love it irs lovely to drive but atm we're having on going issues with our electrics which is frustrating.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 04/09/2023 17:07

I was looking for a towing car in 2019 in used car dealership. Looked at a BMW X4 but didn’t love it. Saw a car in back of show room car park covered up. Had just arrived and needed cleaning before being put up for sale. I put a deposit on it then and there. Jeep Grand Cherokee. Absolutely love it. Automatic, handles great.

I also like the Nissan xtrail. My dad has one.

DrFoxtrot · 04/09/2023 17:07

I've had two Peugeot 3008s and loved them. Spacious and feels comfortable to drive.

Franticbutterfly · 04/09/2023 17:10

F pace.

gogomoto · 04/09/2023 17:13

None, I'd go with the Mazda equivalent. So reliable. Never had their 4 wheel drive but had their people carrier (Mazda 5, no longer available) and it has given 14 years of service and counting

BIossomtoes · 04/09/2023 17:17

We’ve both had Toyota hybrids for years. We currently have a Corolla Touring, it’s an absolute joy.

LoveStHelier · 04/09/2023 17:18

None. I have a Hyndai Tucson ultimate and it’s wonderful. Good on petrol, roomy and plenty of space in the boot. Nice to drive.

ducktape · 04/09/2023 17:34

I have a 2019 Tiguan (my first auto - will never go back to manual!!) .
Absolutely bloody love it, but my one criticism is the boot is relatively small. I take 2 kids camping without DH (his seat therefore gives more space for kit) and I still had to get a roof box. DH's 15 year old passat saloon has more space in the boot than the Tiguan. My best friend has a Q5 and has the same complaint. I would recommend either the Tiguan allspace variant which is a few inches longer or the skoda kodiaq or seat terracan which are the same as the Tiguan allspace, but cheaper.
