If you have one of these and recommend it that would be a bonus!

Audi Q5
BMW X3
Landrover Discovery Sport
Jaguar F Pace

If you want a lot of boot space and are unlikely to need to use the additional seats, our XC90 has a huge boot. The XC60 is also a good shout, and they're both incredibly reliable.

Friend of mine has one of these, can’t remember which one but is sooo nice.

Maddy70 · 30/08/2023 18:15

Work put what you need it for

Then work out luggage space requirements
then which looks nicest

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/08/2023 18:16

Another vote for the Tucson.

WithIcePlease · 30/08/2023 18:20

BMW x3
I'm on my second one. DH keeps asking if I want a new car but I'm not letting it go until it gives up. 12 years old now.
Great to drive. I like it's looks. It holds a ton of stuff - I got 3 flat pack ikea wardrobes in it a tenant had dumped (plus a load of other stuff)

I had a Q5 for a while but it had a seemingly insoluble gear box problem that the garage and dealership couldn't rectify and after it once again dropped out of gear on a busy dual carriageway, I sold it

Angrymum22 · 30/08/2023 18:21

I have a Jaguar F Pace. It is a beautiful car to drive. Very comfortable as both driver and passenger. The way the interior is designed it feels like you are driving a saloon rather than an SUV. It’s all very low key ( not all bling like Mercedes).
We have electric memory seat which solves the age old argument about leaving the seat in the wrong place.
My favourites are the curtesy spotlights, easy to use parking cameras and sensors. Loads of leg room in the rear seats. Huge boot although it’s not as high as other SUVs but you can still do an IKEA run in it.
Like most high end cars servicing and general wear and tear repairs are expensive but cheaper if you can find a reliable independent garage that are experienced with Landrover/Jaguar.
Because it runs mainly as a two wheel drive it is a lot more economical (40-45 on an average on a longish journey) and the diesel engine is low emissions so no charges in the big cities.

Mine was a treat when I sold my business and we decided to have a bit more luxury before becoming OAPs but I really think that we will probably have another one.
As a result of Covid we didn’t get to do the miles we had intended so car has very low mileage but in the current market has still held its value.

Before buying we did a lot of test driving. Jaguar Landrover will let you have a car for a weekend to see if you like it.

An alternative to the FPace is the Landrover Velor very similar but with more off road stuff. The fPace has the facility to get you out of trouble and for driving in snow and ice but they are too elegant to get muddy.

Meadowflower2023 · 30/08/2023 18:50

Never had any trouble with my Land Rovers ever - I don't understand all the negativity around them, maybe we've been lucky 🤷🏼‍♀️ have you checked the Velar out? Amazing car all round, not very efficient though despite what they may tell you.

DH had an X3 that was great. You do have to add all the packages on if you're buying new because the basic models are fairly basic compared to similar priced cars with BMW we've found. He currently has a Q5 (not top spec or SQ5) and that's lovely to drive and more economical than the Land Rover.

Nochoiceleft · 30/08/2023 18:52

I have just sold my xc90 and moved to an ix3.
Both lovely cars to drive. The xc90 was big but I had the 360° cameras and it was a doddle to park with them. The ix3 is much smaller. Doesn’t feel as solid. Very quick.

supersonicginandtonic · 30/08/2023 19:15

My partner had a discovery sport and has just changed for a Tiguan all space (7seater) So so much better and the boot is enormous when the rear two seats are down and rivals the boot space of my zafira tourer.

CaseSolved · 30/08/2023 19:16

Tiguan

PickledPurplePickle · 30/08/2023 19:29

X3 out of that list, though actually prefer the X5 for space

have had both

Madcats · 30/08/2023 19:58

We don't really use cars these days (live in a walkable city), but do need to ferry DD about for sports things at ungodly hours from time to time.

We always buy secondhand and keep them until they get ££ to repair. We've invariably ended up with cars with lots of extras like heated seats etc.

We've just bought a Skoda Superb after our BMW estate died (and the dealer/mechanics moved 15 miles away).

It is massive inside compared to the 3 and 5 series we had. We can comfortably fit 3 strapping teens in the back (perhaps 4).

JassyRadlett · 30/08/2023 20:02

Another recommendation for the Hyundai Tucson, especially one of the higher spec models. We couldn't afford to replace our old Volvo XC60 with the same again and the Tucson was a definite compromise but we really really love it.

CornishGem1975 · 31/08/2023 08:14

I have a Tucson and love it, honestly can't see me ever picking anything else.

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/08/2023 08:15

None. Lexus Rx400, best, most reliable car I’ve had.

CombatBarbie · 31/08/2023 08:21

MrsRoxkwell · 30/08/2023 10:48

2 adults and 2 children, a pram and lots of long weekends away so need a big boot space. I want something with lots of tech inside and looks nice. I finally am able to afford a car that’s not a banger so I want it to be a good one! Currently have an Audi A4 estate but I want something higher up which is why I’m looking at an suv.

Discovery sport boots are small, one of the many reasons I don't like mine.

Best car we ever had that had everything, smax titanium sport.....

SBAM · 31/08/2023 08:22

We used to have a Peugeot 3008, which was decently spacious, we sometimes had to stick stuff in the kids footwells if we went away for a week and took the pram and the travel cot so the 5008 might suit you better. We had the parking sensors and rear camera so no trouble with parking.
We’ve swapped to a VW ID4 now, highly recommend, it’s very roomy but that’s all electric so no good for you.
FIL has always had Discovery Sports, but his last one had a serious engine failure and so he’s now got a Volvo XC90 - very spacious. We’ve had 4 adults and 2 kids in it and had enough room.

akkakk · 31/08/2023 08:29

Slightly surprised about the lack of test drives I have walked into 4 different dealers in the last week (with driving licence) and been allowed an unaccompanied test drive of up to an hour in each with no issues at all…

I told them I would be a cash purchaser (which I will) so no reason to even explore finance - possibly helped by turning up in an expensive sports car to look at small run-arounds, so presenting an image of money is no issue… but seriously - zero issues

Doggydarling · 30/08/2023 10:37

None of them. I'm a Skoda fan though. I've had a few Octavia's and now have a Superb Estate. They were all reliable comfortable and stylish. I have always gone for the L&K (Lauren and Klement) model but even the base models of Skoda are good. The car I have now is great, dgs gearbox, full leather, all safety features, seats a bit like myself, they blow hot and cold, it's 4x4, the leg room is incredible and the boot is massive which I love because I go camping. I've even folded the seats down and put my camping mattress in and slept in it when the weather was too bad to erect the tent. It really depends on your requirements, I don't need a 7 seater, seldom have passengers, need boot space and due to a chronic illness need the car to be automatic for long distances. I considered an Audi A6 and test drove one on the same day as the Skoda but found the Skoda far more comfortable and nicer to drive. I think make a list of what you need/want and work from that.

Skoda superb estate DSG driver here too, best car I've ever had by a long shot. Total luxury to drive.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 30/08/2023 16:09

Seat Ateca which is Seat’s Tiguan.

Just ordered a Cupra (sports) version of the Ateca. It’s a fair bit smaller in the boot than the Tiguan.

As476 · 31/08/2023 08:36

Land Rover/jaguar are expensive to repair, F Pace is prone to oil leaks. Mercedes are also expensive to repair.

I’d advise an Audi/VW/Skoda/Seat as they are all from the same group and fairly easy to repair but very reliable.

somewhereovertherain · 31/08/2023 08:37

Out of that list none but the vw Tiguan.

brother has an F pace so small and unreliable, friend has an iPace also awful - just gone back 70 plate

would have the vw over the Audi - same car can’t be arsed with badges. Not impressed with my colleagues A6 over my Superb considering their tax is 3 times mine for a lowe specd car.

somewhereovertherain · 31/08/2023 08:38

AmilyChestnut · 31/08/2023 08:32

Skoda superb estate DSG driver here too, best car I've ever had by a long shot. Total luxury to drive.

Have a Supeb as well awesome car.

UncleJack · 31/08/2023 08:45

If you’re a rude or aggressive driver then a BMW or Audi, seems to be the way it works wherever I go

Caspianberg · 31/08/2023 09:05

The Tiguan boot should be pretty big, it’s the same as our id4, and we just had two week road trip worth luggage in it, including suitcase, hold-all, mountain buggy pram, toddler running bike, life jackets, beach crap, and whatever else accumulated.

I like the Volvos also though if you can look at them.

larkstar · 31/08/2023 09:14

I agree with several other PP's - I wouldn't be interested in any of those. We've had 4 Skoda's in the family over the last few years and my DD has upgraded from her 2nd Fabia to an Octavia as she has a baby and they've just come back from camping at a festival - the space in the Octavia boot is huge.
