Series for 12 year old girl

We are really struggling to agree on television for my 12 year old at the moment. She is definitely less into fantasy and more into romance and human interest type stories. We have happily watched Heartstopper together. Even the new Wonder Years on Disney. She has started to watch Never have I ever but I just found it too grown-up, so much sex talk. I have no problem with her watching programmes that mention sex but it’s done really casually and feel like more suitable from about 15. She has asked to watch the Summer I turned Pretty which I’m reluctant to allow because that (from reviews) appears too grown-up as well. She used to love TNS about a year ago but all of a sudden she wants a lot more and I’m trying to find a compromise. Mallory towers and the Jaqueline Wilson programmes all provoke an eye-roll when suggested.

its such a tricky age as everything feels either too babyish or too grown-up.

Anyone recommendations would be really appreciated.

High school musical?

Twazique · 29/08/2023 18:33

The Durrells.

Its a shame she isn't so into fantasy as there is a new Wheel of Time starting soon.

What about some older series? Is she too young for my big fat diary or Killing Eve?

GlitchStitch · 29/08/2023 18:33

Sister Sister
Friends
Big Bang Theory

All stuff my preteen daughter is enjoying on Netflix. Nice memories for me too watching it with her.

Staplesonstamps · 29/08/2023 18:34

Free Rein.

It’s mainly Tween and teen girls and boys, horses, stables, freind ships, very tame love interest stories. Early episodes generally centre around main character Zoe who has a special connection with a horse at the stables having never ridden before and the horse is a ‘difficult horse’ etc

usually character stereo types, the bully/domineering one, quirky one, brainy one etc.

story lines develop to show why the bully one is like she is etc and you see her becoming a better person.

MidnightOnceMore · 29/08/2023 18:37

I thought Ghosts was good, I think that is a 12?

Do you think she would like classics like Pride and Prejudice, North and South, Dickens?

Danikm151 · 29/08/2023 18:37

Lizzie mcguire

MidnightOnceMore · 29/08/2023 18:38

Emily in Paris has quite a lot of sex and is a 15. I think too mature for a 12yo.

LivLongAndProsper · 29/08/2023 18:39

Second Hannah Montana! The movie is a sleepover classic here!

NotMadeOfStone · 29/08/2023 18:40

Oh and The Good Place!

Also Drive to Survive on Netflix if you think she might be into Formula 1, it's excellent.

NotMadeOfStone · 29/08/2023 18:41

Oh, and Cheer.

I'll stop now 😁

LivLongAndProsper · 29/08/2023 18:45

Babysitters Club was such a hit here that my DD read all the books!

Nightynightall · 29/08/2023 18:47

My daughter loved Just Add Magic about three girls who discovered a magical cookbook. Also The Worst Witch and Ghosts (which is superb and as a bonus has Ben Willbond in it to dribble over). Currently enjoying Young Sheldon (although she is now 14).

BreakfastClub80 · 29/08/2023 18:47

DD loved Outnumbered

juicelooseabootthishoose · 29/08/2023 18:54

Could she be edges towards grown up programs that are not drama?

Popular options at ours are:
Yorkshire midwives
The dog house
George clark old house new home
Grand designs
Your home made perfect
Your garden made perfect
Savings lives at sea
Anything to do with vets or farms
24 hours in a and e
Glow up (make up artist competition)
Sewing bee
Great pottery thrown down
Jewelry making competition on iplayer
Is it cake
Bake off

I find these types of things strike the grown up balance with safe content

BibbleandSqwauk · 29/08/2023 18:54

Downtown Abbey? Very glamorous frocks etc. My DD loved it.

toottootpipip · 29/08/2023 18:57

I've watched the summer I turned pretty and I think you would be surprised about it. I'd watch it with her so you can talk about the themes in it and answer any questions or explore how she feels about things like her looks/body/relationships/growing up.

Wednesday is darker but I've watched that with my (mature) 8 year old and she enjoyed it.

My 12yo DS is enjoying cobra Kai atm, there's lots of bad language in it but nothing worse than he hears at school/football and he knows he can't use words like that in our house.

PassMeTheRedbull · 29/08/2023 18:58

Depends if she is a mature 12 and whether you are strict over ratings, riverdale is amazing and aimed towards teens, it is a 15 rating though.

Whichwhatnow · 29/08/2023 18:59

Based on my childhood... the original Pride and Prejudice. I don't think that could ever get dated 😅
