Series for 12 year old girl

We are really struggling to agree on television for my 12 year old at the moment. She is definitely less into fantasy and more into romance and human interest type stories. We have happily watched Heartstopper together. Even the new Wonder Years on Disney. She has started to watch Never have I ever but I just found it too grown-up, so much sex talk. I have no problem with her watching programmes that mention sex but it’s done really casually and feel like more suitable from about 15. She has asked to watch the Summer I turned Pretty which I’m reluctant to allow because that (from reviews) appears too grown-up as well. She used to love TNS about a year ago but all of a sudden she wants a lot more and I’m trying to find a compromise. Mallory towers and the Jaqueline Wilson programmes all provoke an eye-roll when suggested.

its such a tricky age as everything feels either too babyish or too grown-up.

Anyone recommendations would be really appreciated.

The Babysitter's Club on Netflix?

ELDV · 29/08/2023 19:13

There are some amazing suggestions. Thank you! She loved babysitters club, such a shame it’s not being continued. Just add Magic was popular too.
I am a bit strict on ratings. Stranger things looks amazing but a bit gruesome. Might need to watch some series myself and do a bit of homework.
I think also I am looking for something my 8 year old can watch with her but that’s another dilemma.
pushing towards some family dramas is actually a really good idea. I loved Gilmore Girls so will start with that.

My dd loved Alexa and Katie on Netflix, I would say it would also be suitable for your 8yo

My DD12 is currently watching "Only Murders in the Building" on Disney. She loves Young Sheldon, Modern Family and The Simpsons.

tigerbear · 29/08/2023 19:37

Agree with PP who mentioned non drama type series.
My 12 year old loves Traitors / Race Across The World / Rise & Fall

She loved Free Rein but watched that when she was a lot younger (I think 10?)

As an aside, she is actually addicted to Never Have I Ever, but I was very surprised that it’s only a 12!! Seems that most of her friendship group watches it too.

And like another poster, DD loves Outnumbered too! We’ve sped through all of the series and on the last one now.

Stranger Things is really scary IMO. The later seasons definitely move more into horror and less sci-fi.

I'm glad I can be the first to recommend Buffy The Vampire Slayer!!!!!

It too is mainly relationships and teen drama (certainly in the first three seasons where it's set in high school). Occasional sex stuff, but all handled very carefully and never salacious.

Also Veronica Mars is one of the best shows ever made. A sassy teen detective solving high school crimes being sassy? And it doesn't patronise at all.

Hope that helps! x

DeathStarCanteenGal · 29/08/2023 20:16

Home Before Dark, if you have Apple? based on the true story of a young girl who is a journalist. My 12 yr old DD is rewatching it

Butteredtoast55 · 29/08/2023 20:24

Do not take up the earlier recommendation of Killing Eve 😳

unicornsinspace · 29/08/2023 20:29

Anne with an E

LaChatte · 29/08/2023 20:35

Definitely not the new Sabrina teenage witch series or Killing Eve, not at all appropriate for a 12yo!

Everything Sucks is a good watch but there's only one season.

ShadyCat · 29/08/2023 20:53

Heartland? Some adult ish themes but mostly one of those everything comes right in the end type of series! Age rating 12+

10in10 · 29/08/2023 21:11

Neighbours probably would have filled this gap back in the day.

oldscrappynhungry · 29/08/2023 21:52

What about all those cheesy American small town dramas on Netflix? They aren't aimed at teens but they are very much PG and any sex is implied not shown. Eg Chesapeake shores, Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias sort of things. Also loads of saccharine but harmless hallmark style tv movies of that style on Netflix and other platforms especially in the run up to autumn/winter holiday season.

Hell no to Killing Eve 😂 excellent as it is.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 29/08/2023 22:01

My 12yo loved Young Sheldon and Emily in Paris.

I think almost impossible to find anything that would suit both 8 and 12yo. Mine both liked some of the old films on Disney like Parent Trap. Malory Towers and Hetty Feather are perfect for your younger child, but as you say, get eye rolls from 12yo!

Mykittensmittens · 29/08/2023 22:10

My DC (12 and 14) are loving my family, and Jonathan creek! Majorca files. The c4 documentary about expensive houses (not the competition one, it’s just like estate agents showing the houses off).

I'm glad I can be the first to recommend Buffy The Vampire Slayer!!!!!
@MissKittyFantastico84 I'm on season 5 with my 13 y/o. It's still great.

I loved Veronica Mars but i recall it being quite dark in terms of the rape storyline. I'm bracing myself for the Spike/Buffy storyline, can't remember how bad it is

We've also watched shitts creek, little Sheldon, good place, modern family, superstore and Gilmore Girls.

Going to try Red Dwarf next for something different. I'm hoping it has stood the test of time!!

DD11 has just started watching Buffy and she's obsessed!!

She also loves The Greenhouse Academy, Bondi Rescue, Good Luck Charlie, The Next Step, Dogs Behaving Very Badly, It's Me or The Dog, Sam & Cat and Gymnastics Academy.

One I didn't expect her to enjoy is Demon Slayer, but she binge watched it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Watched Red Dwarf with my 10 year old last week and he absolutely howled with laughter the whole time

SunMootStars · 29/08/2023 23:04

Came on to say Chesapeake Shores and the Good Witch! PG but all the family enjoy watching these. No bad language and no sex!

felisha54 · 29/08/2023 23:13

The big shot
Northern rescue
Anne with an E

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 29/08/2023 23:24

My 12yo is enjoying Enola Holmes at the moment

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 29/08/2023 23:31

This is Us. I think she'd really like that.

Davros · 29/08/2023 23:36

Merlin. I love it!
New Doctor Who although the earlier series are the best.
First series (or two?) of Ackley Bridge

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 30/08/2023 04:37

Another one for Ghosts, the UK version. There's 4 series on BBC iplayer.
We loved watching it together (tweenies 11 & 13).

Enko · 30/08/2023 07:15

What about the doghouse? It has the human aspect when it looks into people's reasoning for getting a dog. Yet you get involved with the dogs and want them to find a home.
