Help - a scammer used my number? What can i do?

this evening i had a call 7.30ish from a random mobile number. I get a lot of these for work so answered with “hello?”

the caller hung up immediately which immediately made me think cold caller or scammer checking this was a live number. I expected spam calls soon after.

however i just had a call from an angry sounding man who said “yeah, so this number has taken money out of my account?” I of course said no, i don’t think so and hung up.

But something has apparently happened - how could a phone number (cloned or faked or whatever) have taken money from a stranger? How do i stop it going any further?

I suspect the angry sounding man was the scammer.

I had a call today from someone who claimed to be calling from US Customs and Border Patrol. I said "I don't believe you are who you say you are" and hung up and blocked the number.

I would block the number that called you.

Have you considered he was the scammer? If you hadn't hung up quickly he might have tried to string you along to divulge personal details, give your bank details to prove it wasn't the same as the one that "stole his money" .
You were smart, some lonely people would welcome the conversation and give a lot away.
