Ours is doing my head in. There’s nothing I can do about it because it is full to the brim of dh’s tools and diy stuff. I don’t know what half of it is and couldn’t lift a lot of it either. So it will look like this until he’s ready to sort it out. I can barely even get in it now!!

Please either comfort me with your similar situation or inspire me with your amazing tidy garage!!

I would just not go into it!

That said my DH loves shelving and our garage is very well organised.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 28/08/2023 19:08

We’ve got a second freezer in there that I use quite regularly (although I’m not going to be able to get to it soon!) so I can’t just avoid it unfortunately!

No Longer having a garage is genuinely one of the many joys of downsizing. I can 100% guarantee that you can live forever without any of that shit.

InMySpareTime · 28/08/2023 19:13

We keep the car in ours!
Everything else around it is shelved and categorised to within an inch of its life, and we both know where everything is in there.

Lagershandy · 28/08/2023 19:19

If I ever have to go in DHs garage/workshop I always send up a prayer:
"Dear God, please take me first as I do not want to be the one left behind to clear years and years of hoarding.
Amen"

coodawoodashooda · 28/08/2023 19:24

Getting rid of the unnecessary and untouchable shit in the garage was a total highlight of getting rid of my xh.

TheInterceptor · 28/08/2023 19:26

I bet your car insurers think your car is under all the stuff Grin

Mrburnshound · 28/08/2023 19:29

You need some more shelving!

Mine is a state, full of stuff I won't need and don't even want 🤣

RampantIvy · 28/08/2023 19:30

Ours is a 1.5 width garage, so it has garden tools, general tools, DIY stuff (on shelving) and a car. We have always used a garage for its original purpose and not a dumping ground for rubbish. Neither of us are hoarders.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 28/08/2023 19:33

@TheInterceptor not at all! In fact our garage wouldn’t fit a car now - we chopped some off the back of it to create a utility room when we had our extension done which hasn’t helped the clutter situation. I think DH definitely regrets that now!!!

We have 2 cars and lots of DH crap in ours.
On my father's death my mother got a scip and cleared out decades of man crap. ( they had also always put the car in it as well). I think we must just have car obsessed men in our family. A garage is essential for the cars. They still collect crap though.

Clefable · 28/08/2023 19:43

We turned ours into a playroom and utility room! We have a huge drive and never used garage for anything other than storing crap that should have been thrown out years ago. So we built a shed in the garden, moved the important bits and changed garage to give us more actual living space. Not helpful but I do feel your pain as our garage was always an absolute bomb site!

Aparecium · 28/08/2023 19:47

Floor to ceiling metal shelf units (gray)
Recycling (green)
Freezer (blue)
Roofbox (purple) between freezer and shelves. Camping stuff on shelves hidden by roofbox.
Wood, ladder, other long stuff stacked against wall in front of freezer.
Bikes leaning on wall etc at the front (red)

E also have things hanging from the clear walls and from the rafters - though not anywhere where you might bump your head.

It looks spacious, but it's not to scale. If the freezer door is open, you cannot go past easily.

OH is v organised so shelving etc all way round. Fridge freezer in corner. Gym set up & spin bike in there.

SaleOfTwoTitties · 28/08/2023 19:50

We had a right clear out of ours and put essentials in a shed in the garden. We've now got an exercise bike, a treadmill, a chest freezer, a tumble dryer and a washing machine in ours. All in use. So still full, but useful.

RuffledKestrel · 28/08/2023 19:53

I've got bikes in half of mine and the other half is racked for storage.
All you need is some more decent shelving to get everything off the floor and yours will be miles better. I think it looks worse than it is.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 28/08/2023 19:59

I agree @RuffledKestrel . I think if all that stuff was organised it would actually be fine. There is space on the shelving that is already there. But he just chucks stuff in on top of what’s already there so it just gets worse and worse! We’re supposed to be getting a new garage door at some point in the next few months so I’m hoping that might inspire him….

I'm single, but I have three of these in my garage and they work really well to keep stuff organised and off the floor. They're not expensive, so in your shoes I'd buy some and tell DH he either puts stuff on them or it's going into a skip.
