Microsoft single use login email SCAM?

Potatomashed · 28/08/2023 14:18

Anyone else receiving hundreds of emails from Microsoft giving a single use passcode to login? Over the last few weeks I have received 3-4 a day, mainly overnight to my alternate email account (gmail) which are never opened (thankfully). The email address appears legit and it says you can safely ignore the email if you didn’t request the code…

My mum is visiting and says she’s been having the same emails!

I get these all the time. I assume it’s a hacking attempt.

Yes me! Not every day but every few days and then successive times in a day. I think there's a limit on how many times you can try and reset a password in 24 hours (from experience - son with Xbox issues!).

I wondered if it's some sort of bot trying to hack my email address but no idea what to do if they are...

I'd recommend changing your password. It seems someone has gotten hold of it, albeit OTP is keeping them out.

I ha this recently. I changed my password to a really strong one and also added dual factor authentication, so now every time I log in to hotmail. I have to verify it with an app on my phone.

Check the website; have I been pwned to find out which site has had a data breach. Assume everything is compromised and change every password, and put 2FA on everywhere. When doing so click "log out of all devices" just incase they have compromised any accounts.

Yes me, but it wasn’t a legit email address when I looked closely. I blocked it.

Chickenmumsticks · 01/09/2023 22:14

Oh yes I get this loads!

PolliFlinders · 01/09/2023 22:16

I've had this a lot recently.

SconeCreamJam · 01/09/2023 22:19

I’ve been getting the same. Had them sporadically over the years and recently loads in one go every day or so. No idea why

agree with the advice to change your password

someone has get hold of your password and is trying to break into your email account. but microsoft sensibly recognizes they are from an unusual location and says they need a one-time-code. so now they are hoping you will complete the code without thinking.

if they get into your email, they could cause all sorts of trouble. for example, email all your friends with scam messages asking for money or using your identity to hack other people.

change your passwords following the advice in this comic

here is a good password generator that works on this principle
