Has anyone else been to see Six The Musical and thought it was a hit short?

Took DS to see this last weekend, he’d been wanting to see it for ages and so we got tickets (not cheap (£130 for both of us). I really enjoyed the performances and assumed there would be a second half but was really surprised that it finished after an hour and 20 mins with no interval.

I think it’s probably the first time I’ve ever been to a musical (or play) that’s happened and I have to say I felt a bit swizzed. If felt it was a bit more like going to see a band play their greatest hits (without knowing any of the hits). DS still really enjoyed it, as did I as long as it lasted but still felt it was not much for the amount we paid.

I absolutely loved it! The actresses when I saw it were phenomenal and I like the length, I find most musicals too long these days and get bored. I wasn't bored at any point watching Six and would happily go to see it again.

Agreed, acctresses were amazing and loved how it was a totally female cast and crew (including ushers and sound engineer). I'd have just liked a bit more of them.

Yeah I thought it was a bit short and we weren’t told that there was no interval so I was surprised when it ended. I did enjoy it though and I am hoping to see it again.

I was pleased when it ended. 80 minutes of my life I'll never get back. Awful shrieking singing and no plot!

The plot is that the six queens are having a squabble over who suffered the most as Henry's wife and they decide to settle it via a battle of the songs. Then at the end they say that actually it's ridiculous to be competing with each other over that and decide to form a pop group instead.

I'm with you OP.

I'd got my tickets for July 2020, so by the time I actually got to see it, it was probably 18months from when I'd booked them, so I was not aware there was no interval / it was such a short show.
I was disappointed too.
Although I didn't pay anything like £65 for my ticket.

I absolutely loved the show. Loved the energy, and the humour. It is a great show, but it did still feel like I'd been short changed when I was home so early.

It is short but I tend to think most plays (and definitely musicals) are too long these days. Same with books and films.

I've not seen that musical but totally agree lots of things are too long. Oppenheimer nearly finished me off.

I went to a talk in theatre inclusion and they talked about how Six having an all female pit including MD had given women the experience to secure jobs in other shows, in an area that is crazy male dominated.

This element is brilliant.

Which is weird as the writers views on womens rights are in conflict with mine. Shame really, I'd love to see it, love anything to do with the tudors but don't want to give the writers any money.

pastypirate · 28/08/2023 18:39

It's brilliant but yes short.

BlueBlubbaWhale · 28/08/2023 18:39

It was short but we enjoyed it so much we booked to see it again next year

ShirleyPhallus · 28/08/2023 18:45

It’s great but you have to accept that the plot is extremely weak and there is no character development.

I found the scene where they’re competing on who had the most miscarriages distasteful and unnecessary

But loved the music. Amazing they were just 20 or so when they wrote it

TheIsleOfTheLost · 28/08/2023 19:06

I assumed it was a proper show, so was surprised at the run time. I saw it on tour, so not West end priced. Would have been pissed off to pay full whack for an hour.

Els1e · 28/08/2023 19:19

I loved this show and thought the length was fine. I prefer a short, well packed show than something dragging on.

SheWontSheCantShesLeft · 28/08/2023 19:22

I loved how short it was. I hate long anything.

Tiredalwaystired · 28/08/2023 20:30

As someone else has said, it was originally written for the Edinburgh fringe festival. Theatre slots at the festival are short (I think 2 hours including getting in and out for the next production). It also explains why the set is minimal and there are no costume changes.

It was massively popular there and transferred. It took off from there.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/08/2023 20:54

It was short, but I always check the running times

Same here.

MyEyesMyThighs · 28/08/2023 21:29

I've accidentally listened to the American version on Spotify. They have padded it out with history lessons and explanation songs.

Honestly, short and punchy is way better!

msmatcha · 28/08/2023 21:55

Nope it's spot on. Can't bear things that drag.

MumofSpud · 28/08/2023 22:23

Come From Away didn't have an interval either I think

Puffypuffin · 28/08/2023 22:47

It's one of the only shows that I've seen in a while that I was a little underwhelmed with.

VeryQuaintIrene · 28/08/2023 23:00

I loved it and appreciated its conciseness. It was awfully loud for my incipiently elderly ears and it was only afterwards when I bought the soundtrack and listened to that obsessively that I properly appreciated just how clever the writing is.

Needmorelego · 29/08/2023 08:36

@VeryQuaintIrene I've seen SIX twice and the first performance was the "subtitled" version - there were two screens at the side of stage with the words on. It actually made it easier to be aware of what the lyrics actually were.
