And can you estimate how wealthy they are?

A friend from uni set up his own, very successful company selling a product which has now become a household name. He sold it a couple of years ago for a LOT of money so he’s probably the richest person I know.

ScarletWitchM · 28/08/2023 20:32

My friend’s Dad is in the Forbes top 100 list and estimated wealth is £9.5bn

imnotthatkindofmum · 28/08/2023 20:46

In laws

Ex dentists with a mortgage free house worth around £1mill.

Not super super wealthy but a hell of a lot more than us. mostly Nhs dentistry (so could have been a lot more) abd the fact they got a lot of profit from their proportionally cheaper houses

I dated a guy for 8 months, his family had a net worth of 70 million.

Our friend’s own 12 house which they rent out. They are never short of a bob or two, always abroad and eating out. The female friend’s sister is even richer. She is married to a hedge fund specialist. He is working himself into an early grave whilst she is living the life of Riley.
We, on the other hand, are povos!

Yes, generally multi millionaires and worth cos they’ve built business’ and sold them or some continue to run them. From inventions to hotel chains. All nice enough people, we’re all human at the end of the day!

You forgot to mention inherited family wealth -

Readingineading · 12/09/2023 08:54

Sibling, worked hard, headhunted multiple times. Invested in property worldwide, now a sort after consultant in his field. Id estimate around the £5M mark.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 12/09/2023 09:12

No one. Everyone I know is average with little money. Both sets of parents have paid mortgage off but both in 60s so due to age.

AlltheFs · 12/09/2023 09:18

DH used to work in TV and Radio so he knows lots of celebs. But excluding them several of my friends have homes worth £3m +
I live in a very affluent area and have a horse so come in contact with people with more. I’m the opposite of wealthy (modest cottage circa £500k, work in public sector type role).

One of my neighbours is an Earl, their estate is worth a lot. Nice family though, they speak to all the villagers. It’s not quite like Downton but close 😂

DuchessOfPort · 12/09/2023 09:22

A billionaire - how many billions depends on the Rich list and he’s in Forbes too. Drives a Volvo (not an elderly held-together-with-mud type one though). Not famous.

JanesBlond · 12/09/2023 09:28

Probably my friend’s parents - one is a KC, main residence in London worth approx £2m (but obviously benefited from price growth over the last 30 odd years), second property worth approx £500k (no mortgages on either property), I know they have other savings/investments but don’t know how much, but given they bought the second property at the drop of a hat I imagine it’s at least another £1m. They have a very comfortable lifestyle too.

VesperLynne · 12/09/2023 09:34

I know several ppl who are comfortably off , and I guess that would include me , but no one who you’d call rich. I just don’t move in those circles.

There are quite a few Mnetters (like me) who've looked after these people for a living so not surprising that group know plenty of UHNWIs

Yes, it’s not hard! And implies nothing about our own level of wealth. I went to Oxford and met a wide variety of rich types as well as a lot of ordinary people, and through DH’s job, we’ve encountered some insanely wealthy people. He’s dealing with someone worth €9 billion atm, but the one I knew best a few years back, now dead in rather horrible needless circumstances, was in 2018, acc Forbes, worth $4.9 billion. Immensely dull control freak, obsessed with polo and owning football clubs.

Thatsmorethanhalf · 12/09/2023 11:48

Interested in why you want to know?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/09/2023 11:55

I have a family member who is sort of famous and I think she is fairly well off - doesn’t have a showy lifestyle but nice holidays etc

I know some parents from school who are well off - own a building company, work in the sports world etc (not private school). But I’ve never pried into how much people have because that’s not why I’m friends with them.

Positive41 · 12/09/2023 12:27

Many people who are really well off don't parade it. You seriously wouldn't know. Then you have others that have the big cars, designer what not- maxing out their cards.

You stand in the playground and the simple, non assuming types are the professionals- drs, lawyers etc. Again, you wouldn't know. They have that sense of self that is admirable rather than LOOK AT ME!

I love the modest types.

InBedByTen · 12/09/2023 12:46

A family I know through my kids’ school, family wealth just over £3bn. Wife is nice, husband is a twat, daughter is a twat.

SallyWD · 12/09/2023 12:51

DH's cousin. He's a multimillionaire. Don't know how much exactly but he sold a business for £100,000,000 and has other businesses making a fortune. He's very generous to the family and has staff.
