If you make 100k+, what do you do?

I'm just curious. I have two degrees, one being a masters, studied hard, worked hard and still don't make that much money (having DC set me back but was unlikely to have made more than 60k ever). If you make 100k+, what job do you have? How did you make your wealth?

Financial services lawyer in the City. Some sectors pay more for similar qualification levels - I have a degree, a Masters and a professional qualification. I earn more than an academic with a PhD.

BadgerFace · 26/08/2023 19:14

Partner at an accountancy firm, £160k. Undergrad degree (although it counted as a masters from Oxford) and two sets of professional chartered exams in accounting and tax.

I’d rather do something I enjoyed more but it enables me to work 3 days a week whilst my children are young. If I ever move out of practice I’d like to advise women post-life events like selling a business, divorce or being widowed on how to manage their wealth but it would likely come with a pay cut to do something I found fulfilling.

In the meantime I run our grad program and try really hard to promote our niche area of practice to as diverse a group of applicants as possible. Great pay in a structured environment for promotion, especially in the first 6 years with £70k+ by then.

Project Director/ product manager - US employers- 20 years experience in the industry to reach that level. Lot of travel and overseas work.

No DC - not a choice.

Name changed as it's very outing. I'm a management consultant in finance, in a senior role.

BHRK · 26/08/2023 19:20

Senior VP role in US firm. £170K +

cryinglaughing · 26/08/2023 19:20

Not me, dh, programme manager in IT.

LoveRules · 26/08/2023 19:22

I was middle IT management in Civil Servant earning £65k then got headhunted to do same role for a global consultancy with civil service as the client. It's privatisation by stealth imo which is wrong but so was working for a poorly run government department. Much faster pace and way more pressure in the new role.

Ohmylovejune · 26/08/2023 19:23

I made that as a Chartered Accountant although didn't quite take that home as I've always been pro rata part time.

Whattodo112222 · 26/08/2023 19:24

Partner is a finance lawyer in US firm. £145k a year.

Myanna · 26/08/2023 19:25

Work in real estate development about 20 years experience. £160k + potentially good bonus. Highly stressful and long hours (not that other jobs aren't).

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 26/08/2023 19:25

Health and Safety. No degree, vocational qualifications.

gwenneh · 26/08/2023 19:26

Marketing director, I also have multiple degrees including an MBA. I started as a copywriter 15 years ago, freelancing alongside a dull call centre job.

CauliflowerBalti · 26/08/2023 19:26

Not me - my partner. No degree. Owns an advertising agency.

AHelpfulHand · 26/08/2023 19:28

Own an emergency tradesman agency

no G.C.S.Es

17CherryTreeLane · 26/08/2023 19:28

A bit like LoveRules but in Education. Was a successful Headteacher earning £80k but head hunted to lead an Academy Trust on £100k+. If 5 years ago you'd have said I'd end up in an Academy Trust, I'd have said "over my dead body" partly because I disagreed with the "fat cats" CEOs. But the balance has tipped now, with over 50% of schools in Trusts and all schools on track to be there within next 5 years.

I work in the construction industry as the Director of Change. I don’t have a degree but I have done a lot of education during my working life. From six sigma to AAT level 2 & 3 (which was just to understand finance more not to actually use o work in finance).

My career started in call centres, worked my way up to management, moved into Management Information/business information where I learned a lot about data analysis.

My teams are involved in every change across the business. We are UK wide and have over 30 offices. So it’s quite a large scope. The changes can be environmental/cultural, HR related, H&S related, change of legal standards etc.

I wouldn’t say I am wealthy. I am a single parent and income household and only recently started earning this much. I would say it’s the last 5 years that I realised, wealthy people don’t create wealth by simply earning a lot. I come from a working class back ground and had no clue about investments etc. Everyone wealthy I know have money all over that makes extra passive income.

I am focussing on that now.

minipie · 26/08/2023 19:35

Used to make this a few years back as a City lawyer. Not any more.

UnaVaca · 26/08/2023 19:40

Does anyone else get annoyed when people talk about husbands?

eurochick · 26/08/2023 19:45

I made this as a lawyer at a City firm. I'm now in my first year of working for myself so I will see how I am doing by the end of the year!

Yes. It's irrelevant. The question is what do you do.

I'm self employed and earned 130k last year, accidental business started just before the pandemic that just exploded.

Yes, I might be a bit jealous though.

fedupofbeingbroke · 26/08/2023 19:48

Thanks for your replies everyone! Looks like chose the wrong career 😂
