Why are my boobs so swollen and big?

I'm 42, definitely peri-menopausal, fairly regular but short (3 day) periods. My boobs are deflated and saggy after children and weight loss, but they've gone massive now, they're so full it looks like I've had a boob job! Was worried initially that I may be pregnant, but it's highly unlikely. Have only had sex once since my last period and it was mostly with a condom and he didn't finish in me.

Can swollen boobs be a symptom of perimenopause? They've been swollen since 10 days after my period. Normally they just swell up like this about a week before my period and then deflate back down when my period is over. Period is due on 4th Sept.

Id guess pregnant too, sorry op but your describing early pregnancy boobs to me 🤔

GG1975 · 26/08/2023 11:45

I'm peri and over the last few months my boobs have been very swollen and sore just before my period.

I'm not familiar with these. Can I just buy them at Boots or any pharmacy? If they're more accurate earlier on, why don't people use these instead of pregnancy tests?

All pregnancy tests measure HCG. I've no idea what @lillyfleur means by "HCG sticks" but presumably just early pregnancy tests which have high sensitivity rather than a fancy CB test with a digital display showing weeks. Pregnancy is picked up by pregnancy tests.

I have swollen boobs in perimenopause, only in my luteal phase though, never in the follicular phase.

Just Google pregnancy test strip HCG and you will find out what I mean.

Only a pregnancy test can rule this out.
If you think it's too early to get one, try the hcg sticks

It's this statement lilly. You're making it sound like if you're too early for a pregnancy test, there's another second, secret option for detecting pregnancy. The "HCG sticks" you talk about are simply pregnancy tests but the cheaper, sensitive ones rather than the expensive ones marketed so effectively. I was clarifying for the op that I think this is what you mean.

I have early pregnancy boobs symptoms each month due to peri. I've been single for a long time so definitely not pregnant.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 26/08/2023 11:55

When I was peri- I had a long chat with GP about this and he said it was definitely a symptom, and that it could last until I came out of the other side of menopause!
It is actually much better now, though has been a little worse since starting utrogestan.

Loverofoxbowlakes · 26/08/2023 11:57

Fml. Teenagers know you can get pregnant from pre-cum, you're 40+, presumably know how conception works.

Of course you could be pregnant op, take a test.

Xiaoxiong · 26/08/2023 12:00

The sperm count is a lot lower, you're not wrong. But you also only need one...

I clicked on your thread, also 40, also with swollen sore boobs around the time I would have had a period (have had a Mirena for 10+ years) I haven't had sore boobs at this point in my cycle for years so I was wondering the same if it could be perimenopause related. (I have taken a pregnancy test and it's negative)

mnahmnah · 26/08/2023 12:02

I get swollen painful boobs a week or so before my period. Only started the last year or so - I’m 44. I assumed it was Peri-menopausal. Definitely not pregnancy.

Hcg sticks Grin

lillyfleur · 26/08/2023 12:35

I mentioned the HCG strips as she said she hadn't done the test yet as she think it may come out as negative because it's too early to detect. The HCG strips detects it from the very early days, hence why I mentioned it. Have a nice weekend
