Has anyone had an ADHD diagnosis as an adult?

And was it helpful?

It's been brought up from my mental health team, and the more research I do into how ADHD presents in girls/women the more I am certain I have it. I had always known ADHD as the way it presents in boys so hadn't even considered it. I just always thought I had serious character flaws that nobody else did.

But I'm wondering if a diagnosis is even helpful at this point, and what help I could actually get.

Grateful for any information/advice.

Yes, I got my diagnosis about 6 months ago,

I've not decided whether to go down the medication route or not. However, for me it just kind of validated my whole life. Everything made sense...I am not lazy or stupid.

I am a lot kinder to myself and my partner is a lot more understanding. I did feel a lot of anger after my diagnosis that nobody helped that child/teenager that was me and was so clearly struggling, but I think in those days ADHD in girls was not as recognised as it is today so I've made my peace with that.

I've looked at applying for a grant through Access to Work, a lot of the things I have already got in place that I bought before my diagnosis but I might see if I can access some ADHD coaching. My work are happy to also refer me to occupational health if I need anything.

It's still exhausting at times but hey ho. I also belong to a Facebook support group for women with ADHD which is great.

Hope if you go down that road you find some comfort in it x
