Do you ever get woken up by smells?

This happens to me at least once a month but everyone else I ask says it doesn't happen to them. I've googled it but can't find much at all.

My DH or my adult DS will cook food late at night, or in the early hours, or just make toast and the smell wakes me up. I've also woken from a smoke smell outside or when one of the cats has pooed in the litter tray.

This isn't just from when I'm in a light sleep, it wakes me from a dream state too.

Anyone else woken by aromas?

Yes! I’m terrible about smells, any random smell just sets me off. I can tell if my kids are dicking about in the kitchen when I’m trying to lie in on a Sunday just from the smells wafting and I can’t drift back to sleep. Neighbours starting barbecuing late on a summers evening is one of my biggest bugbears as the smell gets in and can’t get out, then I can’t sleep. Sends me into a mad rage. See also people not opening windows etc after using the toilet. I can really tell quickly if someone isn’t clean just from their smell at a distance. The smell of not properly dried clothes makes me gag! Anyone I’ve ever dated has to be the cleanest freshest person ever, and I wash bedding etc maybe more often than people I think usually do, although I don’t use harsh chemicals or smells. I don’t want necessarily like zoflora strength smells, it’s more that I don’t want any smell. Neutral smelling life is my dream. Don’t get me started on noise 😩

Yes, I bought a bread machine once with the intention of letting it run overnight for freshly baked bread in the mornings, the reality was waking at 5am because the smell was overwhelming and I got rid of it again.

We had a stinky room on holiday and it woke me up several times one night (I moved the next day).

what I think prob happened was I had those tiny micro wake ups that are part of a normal sleep cycle in in they wee second I caught a whiff and that was enough to rouse me.

I guess a drowsy caveman would evolve to bounce awake ar the smell of smoke or hungry lion so makes sense evolutionary wise.
