What are your favourite/nicest things about humanity?

I've been a little despairing of humanity lately with so many horrendous stories in the news so I'm trying to focus on the positives.

What are your favourite things about people/humanity generally?

One thing that really made me smile is the FB fan page for Willow the Didcot cat. That so many people love this random cat and that people from around the world are joining because seeing Willow makes them smile is just lovely. It's a quirky little thing that is just lovely imo especially knowing that there are other much adored pets/wildlife out there that some town or village have claimed as theirs.

Also seeing an elderly man giving a woman(In genuine need, not a chancer and foreign and clearly unfamiliar with the system here) a few pounds today towards her bus fare(Drivers don't give change here) so that she didn't need to lose a £20 was so nice.

When the beautiful girl in my daughter’s football team scores a goal, all the parents on the sideline cheer extra loud for her, because she is in foster care and doesn’t have a mum or dad on the sideline to cheer for her.

A man stepped into a puddle today to help me get my buggy across. I try to make a point of recognising these moments and building gratitude otherwise I find I easily adopt a negative position and frame of mind much of the time.

Last month I was toiling to get my crazily heavy case upstairs on the boiling hot, steep subway stairs in NYC, a big man in a vest with about ten pounds of gold round his neck lifted my case, carried it up like it was weightless and walked on, when I thanked him he shrugged like I was someone’s embarrassing mum (which I am 😜). Saw several acts of the same sort of brusque chivalry, it was really reassuring in fairly intimidating surroundings.

You only hear about bad news generally on TV etc.

You must remember that every second of every single day millions of people are doing something nice for someone else, even if it's just a smile.

I had three carrier bags of shopping, my handbag and a walking stick and was heading along the road when suddenly the heavens opened and rain came slashing down. I was wearing a hooded jacket but it would have been too difficult to put the hood up when I was carrying so much. Suddenly a young woman stopped beside me and asked if I would like her to put my hood. She did that for me and even tied the cords
What a star she is!

I like how children can be so open minded and welcoming.
Toddler DS keeps pointing out all the 'creepy' animals on holiday like lizards/big insects/bats and calling them 'aww so cute'
My bigger DS has been invited to join in many games of football through a combination of hand gestures and Google translate on phones.

I love the lengths people go to to amuse others.

I love that many of my friends became so through dog walking.

I love that most of us find joy in being kind.

I love how fb can be a force for good; for helping people connect in the local community - helping find stuff/animals etc, thanking people, sharing congratulations etc.

I love how a smile can spread.

i came across the 3D toy shop the other day,
they make bespoke teddies for children who’ve been in hospital to match their scars or medical equipment so they get a toy that looks like them
the children just loved them and it’s really special

A total stranger on my penpal group found out about a burglary that had happened to me and sent me a shoebox full of beautiful Christmas ornaments (mine were nicked). I'll never forget that.

Just a small thing, but when I got my council property when I was in my 30s, my Housing Officer was so genuinely happy for me it shocked me.

I worked with her very briefly when I was 16, so we knew each other slightly.

I had a lot of family problems when I had my child in my late 20s as I realised how abusive my parents were. My mum was being so horrid around the time I got my council property. It felt so strange to see my Housing Officer, who was around my mum's age, who barely knew me, be so genuinely happy for me.

I cried about it when she left because I was so touched.

Saving animals is also my favourite. Sometimes people can distract you in a positive way.

AffIt · 18/09/2023 14:26

I genuinely believe the vast majority of people, at population level, are good (or at least try to be).

I like random chats with strangers at bus stops.

Just giving this a bump. I like this thread. It's helped soothe my anxiety a little bit.

We got a puppy 3 days ago and the sheer joy on my ds’s face when he sees her, considering we are very lucky and our kids have very fortunate lives, he just kept saying ‘mummy this is the greatest day of my life’. It’s just heartwarming how honestly a child can love something, immediately and without question.
