Want to inject some variety into my meal planning so going to give Hello Fresh a try. Have a houseful of fussy eaters (think along the lines of one doesn’t eat what the other does and the don’t eats are rice, potaotes, curry … the list is endless!).

What have been hits or misses for you, if you use them? Thanks!

Just whatever you do, don’t forget to order or you’ll end up being sent the cheapest, crappiest meals that no one else wants!

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 25/08/2023 18:53

I think their the ones using slave monkeys to harvest coconuts.

It’s ok I just checked they’ve changed suppliers due to a PETA investigation.

Magicisuponus · 25/08/2023 19:03

Well, I placed an order for 4 meals, was all excited and didn’t do groceries, and it was never delivered…bastards

mumtotwox · 25/08/2023 19:09

Wouldn't recommend at all! Forever forget to pack ingredients, recipe cards and often wouldn't turn up.

Lilylicaclavendar · 25/08/2023 19:19

Oh heck, that doesn’t sound good at all. Bummer. Gusto don’t deliver to our area so HF was the only option. Back to the drawing board. Thanks all!

I really enjoyed ours. Hits here we're bbq chicken wedges, pizza on a naan bread, lemon chicken linguine, chicken tikka, chicken korma, mexican sweet potatoes, pork tacos, mango chicken wraps, oregano chicken, peri peri chicken, crispy chicken roast.

I kept all the recipe cards and have re-created lots of them since.

The best part of it was not having to think about what I had to cook for tea or find all the ingredients!

We will definitely being doing it again soon.

GreenMonstersParty · 25/08/2023 19:21

And all the burgers - beef burgers, pork burgers, chicken burgers! The list was endless and all were a huge hit for the 2 teenagers here

Blingstar · 25/08/2023 19:25

I tried both and found Mindful Chef must tastier.

mondaytosunday · 25/08/2023 19:27

We have it and never missed a delivery, a couple times the cards have been missing but you can get the instructions from the app. They always preselect meals but they are not the cheapest ones as claimed upthread! You have a few weeks to change the orders.
We don't often get the pasta dishes as I feel I can make those, but the two times we did very tasty.
We like the stir fry type stuff and anything in a taco (not the veggie ones). There's so many to select from you just have to try - only once have we said 'never again', mostly it's just not one of our tastes rather than being poor.
What's bad is the amount of packaging, but as the whole point it is all measured for you can't be helped. What's good is the portion control. Most of the time it is very filling, only once or twice have we though we could have had bigger servings but that's probably because we are greedy!
There's usually a half off your first box deal.

Lilylicaclavendar · 25/08/2023 19:51

Ooooh … okay that sounds much more positive. Do you have to sign-up for a recurring order then or can you do a one or two-off?

I've found them really good and often use them if I've got a busy weekend so I don't have to think about food for the week. I've got 3DC one of whom is veggie. I usually order 3 meat and one veggie dish and just adapt the other ones a bit for her. The portions are usually enough to feed the 5 of us.
I second the burgers as hits but there have been very few recipes I wouldn't make again. Some are definitely now part of my standard meals.
If you want a referral code I think this should work but I'm not totally sure what it gives you! HS-7RAXQ6PEZ. or here

thanksamillion · 25/08/2023 19:54

You do have to sign up but it's relatively easy to postpone, pause or cancel completely. Just make sure you do it on time.

BeyondMyWits · 25/08/2023 20:02

I tried hello fresh, gusto, mindful chef and the one with just spices etc. All of them are way too salty, and meat is not great quality. Lots of passata and black beans with fiddly little plastic sachets of over salty, goopy stuff. Not worth it in my opinion. I so wanted them to be, but not for me.

Takoneko · 25/08/2023 20:08

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 25/08/2023 18:53

I think their the ones using slave monkeys to harvest coconuts.

Using the word slave to refer to animals feels hugely distasteful to me.

Humans use animal labour all the time for all kinds of things. Are they slave dogs guiding the blind or sniffing for drugs? Slave horses being ridden?

Animal welfare is important but there is no such thing as animal “slavery”.

AllSewnUp · 25/08/2023 20:10

Hello Fresh has revolutionised meal time for me OP! Can't recommend them enough, personally. You can take a break from ordering from them whenever you like, for as long as you like. I'm veggie and tbh only a small handful of the veggie options that I've tried so far I wouldn't get again - typically I've really enjoyed all of the veggie options I've tried... Obviously can't comment on the quality of the meat based meals though.

Their pasta options and the taco's are perhaps my favourites!

Takoneko · 25/08/2023 20:14

OP- I like Hello Fresh. I get a box every 3-6 weeks on average. Their east Asian recipes are often really nice and the chicken ones with creamy sauces and roast potatoes and veg are usually nice. Soft tacos are usually good- I like the Korean ones a lot. They also used to do a pork and beef meatball recipe with mash and a really addictive gravy that I haven’t seen in a while. Hoping that will pop back up in the winter.

I really like HF. Prefer it to Gousto.

This week we did have an inconvenience but more so for the other person, our boxes were swapped 🙄 so I got 4 meals that I wouldn't necessarily order but we're nice and he got 3 calorie controlled rapid meals.

I complained and got a full refund tho. I hope he did the same!

faban · 25/08/2023 20:22

I have a couple more free boxes if anyone would like

SmithfamilyRobinson · 25/08/2023 20:35

I would also recommend HF and this is speaking as a very competent cook... one retired DH and two partially employed DS aged 20+. First I felt a bit stupid getting a bag with 2 red peppers and then packs of tomato/kidney gloop but you know what? Even the pasta dishes are a bit different and I simply can't be arsed to menu plan for 7 days. Happy to cook from scratch at the weekend. The only meal I thought utterly tasteless was a tomato and prawn risotto. One of the DS has complained about the bean based dishes and DH thinks the fish portions are very small. BTW ordered one of their market extras... didn't realise I'd be making onion bhaji from scratch!

Lilylicaclavendar · 25/08/2023 22:57

@SmithfamilyRobinson I hear you on not being arsed to menu plan for seven days. That’s exactly where I am, I’m just so sick of it, same meals week in week out, kids (all teens to young adults) refusing to eat x,y,z.

Definitely going to sign up and place an order after reading all your replies and will take it from there. @faban and @thanksamillion, thank you for the codes … will definitely put to use!

I used to love Hello Fresh, but the recipes got worse and worse, anything good had a huge premium, so I cancelled it.

Since then I've been using Simply Cook, which is much more flexible - they provide the spices and sauces, and you add meat and veg. They suggest a shopping list, but you can swap things out easily. I'd recommend the beef rending, the chicken makhani, and the Thai red prawn curry

I like both HF and Gousto. I'd definitely give it a go, especially with one of those codes.

With HF, I second any of the burgers. I also really enjoyed the chicken tikka masala, chicken pasta & cumberland sausages.
