Which games do you let your Yr7 have on their phones?

DS is complaining break times are boring as all the other children are playing on their phones. He has a phone with no games (except Duolingo maths!) and his games are all on iPad. iPad time is restricted. It's worked well so far but he's asking for something to do at break times.

Which games do you let your Yr 7 have on their phones to pay at break, preferably that don't use data?

or you can just buy them a phone. No smart option and he can do some studying or whatever children did before staring at screens

? he has a phone. And I'm not sure many kids spend their break times studying, certainly no one did when I was at school! He's just wandering around alone all break at the moment.

When dd was in year 7 it was all about 'among us' they used to set up a game just for them. It was hilarious apparently.

Can't he just play the same games as his friends?

RejectedAgainandAgain · 25/08/2023 12:06

He doesn't have any friends yet, so no one he feels he can ask. He has ASD so finds navigating break times hard, but is obviously feeling very alone. His TA has confirmed most children are glued to their phones at break. I'm not sure it's the best for him but neither is him feeling left out and babied because mummy has put limits on his phone 🤷‍♀️

Bless him. I'd just let him have the games he normally has on his iPad on his phone?

Why has a 7 year old even got a phone? This sounds like terrible parenting.

RejectedAgainandAgain · 25/08/2023 12:40

Or terrible reading comprehension skills.... We're talking about a Yr 7 child with ASD, who now takes a bus alone into the neighbouring town to go to a new secondary school having a telephone. Yes, it's easier for him to have a phone so he can contact me if he misses the bus; he has his bus ticket on his phone so he doesn't have to worry about buying a ticket each time. No, I don't think it's terrible parenting for him to have a phone.

Neither do I want him so anxious about break times that he starts refusing to go to school. I'm not happy about installing games on it, but if everyone else does, then I don't know which is the lesser evil.

Maybe you should read the thread properly before leaping in with your judgements? Hmm

Hi Op I found this thread as I was googling this exact subject!

Firstly - it's tragic that in the first term of secondary kids are allowed to stare at phones in their breaks. Our school banned phones at break time for this exact reason - the head said all the kids were staring at phones and not interacting/ talking to each other

Have you tried speaking /emailing the head and pointing this out? Many secondaries ban phones completely during school hours.

It is so sad as well for a kid with ASD (one of mine is autistic) - that they face this additional barrier to socialising.

waterrat · 12/09/2023 10:40

My son by the way OP absolutely loves a game called geometry dash - its v cool apparently.

however I really think it's sad that this would be the answer. Push for a phone ban and point out the damage it is doing to childrens ability to form new friendships.

Variety in this house from chess or Risk that they can play with friends either online or as pass and play to random mindless crap like crossy road.
