That’s it really - off for a week with DH and some DC late teens / early 20s. I know nothing of the area. Staying in a well equipped holiday house, happy to cook/bbq. Best beaches, fish and chips, farm shop, butcher, castles…?

Just got back from there. Aberporth beach is lovely, as is Mwnt NT one, my DH and kids did body boarding there. We ate at a pub in St Dogmaels called the Ferry Inn, very nice. There's a beach nearby called Poppit Sands that was a bit big and windy for us but it looked great for surfing etc and had good amenities.

Yes, Poppit Sands beach is great. The best place to go crabbing is at St Dogmaels off the jetty, which is just along from The Ferry Inn.

For places to eat, the Copper Pot is really nice, also Yr Hen Printworks, both in Cardigan itself. I haven’t been but everyone raves about the Moody Cow just outside Aberaeron. Aberaeron is lovely for a visit too.

If you’re looking for things to do there is a distillery called In The Welsh Wind in Tanygroes about 8 miles north of Cardigan on the main road. Cardigan Castle is well worth a look around too, the food there is Bistro 1176 is also really good.

I lived in the area for a long time, still have family there and I really miss it.

Crwst and Pizzatipi are lovely in Cardigan itself.

Mwnt and Poppit Sands are nice beaches.

Cilgerran Castle is small but right on the doorstep. I also like the Welsh Wildlife Centre.

Penbryn beach is beautiful and the cafe in the car park - The Plwmp Tart - is lovely. In Cardigan itself there is Pizza Tipi (better on a nice day as it is mostly outdoors).

Near Cilgerran Castle there is a nature reserve and you can take a guided Canadian canoe tour to the castle itself and back which is good fun.

Llangranog is a traditional seaside town (be careful where you park - one of the car parks is notorious for fining people). Aberaeron is pretty - try the honey ice cream on the quay side. Llanarchaeron is a nearby NT farm with gardens and rare breed animals.

Another vote for Mwent beach. Also, the honey farm at Newport and the seafood lunch at the Ferry Inn at St Dogmaels.

Oh this is all brilliant, thanks so much. Just what I hoped for. Have made it as far as Carmarthen … not far to go!

Another couple of bits:

The Golden Lion in Newport does a lovely Sunday lunch. It's very popular so get there early or book.

There's a great old fashioned sweetshop in Cardigan, everything in jars.

There are dolphins in the harbour at Newquay.

Agree re Mwnt beach. Aberporth good
for paddle boarding. Llangranog is a good beach too, park at the top and walk
down.

Also agree with Pizza Tipi being great fun and lovely food.

Mancinnis is the new Italian in cardigan and very good. Crwst for brunch. Yum yums in cardigan for old fashion sweet shop. shire horse centre in the road to Fishguard a good day out. Pentre Ifan to see the stones, same as stone hendge. Newport, Golden Lion great but will need to book. The pink house before the turning to Nevern on the Cardigan to fishguard road great for tea and cake. Cilgerran castle small but lovely. If heading to Fishguard stop at Cwm yr Egwlys for a perfect beach and great ice cream very small But you can hire a paddle board and very safe swimming. Crabbing at lower town in Fishguard and they have a good cafe. Aberporth a great beach as is Mwnt but it gets busy and swimming due to rip tides can be tricky. Have fun!!!

This is all fantastic stuff. I’m booking up restaurants as I read! Thank you!

I second the Printworks and Pizzatipi.

Llangranog is a beautiful place but yeah - get a taxi down if you can. The Pentre Arms is a favourite haunt of mine!

Bovrilla · 25/08/2023 20:28

There's a cracking chippy near St Dogmaels
Ceibwr beach
Poppit Sands
Narberth for some shopping

Wasywasydoodah · 25/08/2023 20:29

Castell Henllys isn’t far. It’s a reconstructed iron age settlement with people demonstrating different iron age things. Was a really good few hours when we went

ShanghaiDiva · 25/08/2023 20:30

Crwst - great food.

Delphigirl · 29/08/2023 10:43

Thanks everyone - so far eaten at pizza tipi and the ferry inn, going to the copper pot tonight. Had breakfasts from crwst . Kayaked up the river from the nature reserve. Love the beach at Mwnt. On our way to cilgerran castle. Determined to do almost everything recommended!! Thanks!
