Going away with only a small bag

If you were going away for two nights for work (don't need to wear office clothes) and could only take a 20l rucksack with you - how/what would you pack?

Lightweight layers that can be rolled up small (vest tops , lightweight shirt etc). Wear anything chunkier rather than pack it (jacket, cardigan or whatever). Travel sized toiletries.
Can you get away with just one pair of shoes/sandals?

Toothpaste
Small mouthwash
Toothbrush
Moisturiser
Hairbrush
2pants
2socks
Light nightdress
Some snacks
Charger
Bottle of water

Small bag containing
Phone
Purse
Lip salve
Mints
Tissues
(Should fit in the big bag)

I would just wear the same clothes and shoes throughout
I would use hotel bodywash.
I would wash my hair before I went so it didn't need it.

I’d wear an outfit day 1 that I could swap the top for the next day, or take a thin dress that would take up the same amount of space. Then just clean pants, basic toiletries, phone and charger. I’ve done it several times - just need small size toiletries and hope a towel is provided! Actually I would do my hair such that I wouldn’t need to wash it or style it much the next day so limiting things needed there too. If you have to take a laptop and charger, slot that in, or a notebook and pen.

I'm just wondering if there's something I've missed with travel items. I found my charger plug and hair brush very bulky so I might see if there's such a thing as a travel/foldable one. I did pretty well with toiletries I think but I want to see if there's things that can double up - conditioner that also styles? Moisturiser that also cleans?

I might see if there's thinner clothes I can take? Silk shirt maybe instead of quite a heavy cotton top. I took a sweatshirt as my outer layer.

I wore the same trainers every day and took minimal gym gear too for the hotel health club.

My bag was rammed though and really heavy - I think that was mainly laptop related though I did also have a water bottle in the side pocket.

This is going to be a regular thing for work and I mainly just want to try and avoid having a suitcase to make travel a bit easier (home to station, to hotel, to work)

Assuming towel and hairdryer provided, I think that's quite easy - just wear same shoes and trousers and take change of top and underwear. Or dresses if warm weather.

Which hotel are you staying in. May well have USB sockets, so just need a cable to charge up phones

ColonelSpondleClagnut · 25/08/2023 13:17

Just a 20l Rucksack is quite small. Could you get a larger Rucksack and also wear a bumbag or cross body handbag for phone etc?
Or could you leave stuff like chargers or a spare pair of trainers/boots at work?
As the weather gets wetter don't forget you might want a rain cover over your bag or put things in plastic bags inside.
You can tell I am clearly the epitome of style when travelling!

Are you limited by luggage space e.g. flight with no hold baggage or just what you can carry? I find my small but good quality carry on-size suitcase, with sturdy handle and really efficient and quiet wheels, much better for walking with than trying to wrestle with a heavy stuffed backback. Worth investing in if this is going to be a regular trip.

I think that’s a sizeable bag. My little rucksack is 10 litres and that’s all I use for stays of that length. A couple of tops and underwear/nightwear. Phone charger. Toiletries/medication.

Most hotel televisions have usb sockets so you can charge from there.

I have this, which is 15L and no problem for 2-3 nights - limited cosmetics too as I almost always fly. I don't take gym kit though, just a swimsuit very occasionally!
