Why do I have a belly?

I'm 5'0 tall and weigh 50g. My waist is 25/26 inches. I don't eat choc/sweets/crisps/cake. I do eat carbs, like a piece of toast for breakfast and a bit of pasta with dinner. I rarely drink alcohol, don't smoke etc. I'm quite sedentary I must admit.

Couple of years ago I cut calories and carbs and I got to 47kg but I still had a belly. I felt to lose any more weight wouldn't have been healthy?!

Even when I was a teen and weighed about 45kg I had a belly.

Do some people just genetically have a belly? Or is there something I'm doing terribly wrong?

I tried a new skirt on today, it fit perfectly around the waist but was bursting the buttons at my stomach, it looked awful.

Before I had kids I was at the gym about 5 times a week. Weighed about 1.5 stone less than I do now. Would wear a string bikini ...but still had a little pot belly. I think I could with 6 st but still wouldn't have a flat belly
Worse things to worry about. ( I'm still pissed off about it tho!!)

Forgot to say I'm 28 and have no kids.

My Auntie used to tell me that's how females where, ie its the shape of many. I'm slim, but never had a totally flat stomach, just the way it is.

cato40 · 24/08/2023 21:34

I think people are built different. I havel longer limbs and a short abdomen, never had a thin waistline even in my slimmer days. Have noticed other women with flat abs tend to have a longer abdomen. Intermingle those with a flat belly tend to have chunky ankles and tights. Even now that I am older and fatter I have lean legs. I think it is just about where our fat is distributed

anunlikelyseahorse · 24/08/2023 22:25

Are you sure you're not a large a jelly baby weighing in at 50g?!

Op at you are right at under 47kg you'd start to be unhealthy.
It's difficult to know because your perception of having 'a bit of tummy', might be different from someone else. You could make a GP appointment and ask their advice.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 24/08/2023 22:46

You have a uterus in there and various other organs. It's quite normal even if you don't like it.

Littlemissalone · 25/08/2023 09:45

Gosh lol I meant 50kg of course! Oops.

But women with flat stomachs still have a uterus. Why does mine stick out so much? I honestly think it's all fat because I can grab it between my hands.

Youre probably an apple shape which is the most common.

I am too. My arms and legs are always lean and slim. My weight is on my boobs and tummy.

atthebottomofthehill · 25/08/2023 09:50

Of course it's normal, it's a perfectly normal womanly shape. This is how toxic our culture is that we think it isn't.

BogRollBOGOF · 25/08/2023 10:00

Sometimes it is just your shape. The natural curve of my spine throws my tummy forwards and my bum back and emphisises it all.

It's worth working on a strong core for good health (general strength and avoiding back pain) and strong abdominal muscles do help pull the abdomen in, especially as you get older and if you go on to have children. Building strength and muscle tone in youth is a great investment for future health.

Is it the same first thing in the morning as the evening?

It's a natural place to store fat.

How's your stress level?

You might find with even moderate regular exercise it would reduce. Do you manage 10k steps a day?

I think you do not really have a belly and you are fishing for people to validate how small you are by posting your measurements of a small waist. You have a body, healthy bodies have some muscle and fat. The problem isn't having a tiny belly, the problem is that you want to be emaciated.

Martedi · 25/08/2023 10:33

The way you describe yourself, you are a slim person who is an Apple shape. Everyone has a shape that they can’t change. Some women are cucumbers, some are pears and some are apples.

You can look online to see clothing style advice for the different body shapes. Not all styles of clothing suit all body shapes. If you don’t like how some clothes sit on you, buy different styles.

I’m an Apple shape and probably two or three times your size at least. It’s irritating when clothes fit except for the waist and tummy. But it’s just a fact of life.

itsallnewnow · 25/08/2023 11:49

If you're sedentary you're probably "skinny fat". Slime and petite but near zero muscle tone. I work with a lady like that, she's a size 8 but sort of 'soft' everywhere especially the tummy she says.

This isn't a judgement by the way I'm just fat fat so would happily swap Grin
