DS just found these in the garden. They are hard and around 2-3mm long.

Any ideas?

Ooh fascinating, I would say they were some type of oak gall (a type of wasp eggs basically) or other type of insect. Did you find them just on the ground or in the soil etc?

They were on top of the trampoline 😁, it’s under an oak tree

OK, I'm stumped... and that's my thing!

Eggs are usually similar in colour (unless the thing in them is developing). I'm actually tempted to say some sweets from the kids???

Oak galls?

I think you might be right! I will try and check the tree tomorrow with the big lens on my camera to see if I can spot some falls on the leaves.

A wasp lays an egg on a leaf causing the tree to make a gall around the wasp egg.

C1N1C · 24/08/2023 19:11

Usually galls are made of plant-like material... you have some that are wooden balls, others are extensions of a leaf... I'd rule these out as galls as its not in the parasites interest to have them falling off and being unprotected/preyed upon.

I have found some images that look similar for oak plum falls and oak Apple galls (see here)
There were also oak leaves on the trampoline, so these may have detached from the kids jumping.

You're welcome, I thought it would help identifying the 'eggs'
