Dartford Crossing - disabled tax

questionersquestion · 24/08/2023 12:45

We've got to go across the Dartford Crossing and I was just looking up how to pay.

The car actually has disabled tax (not sure what it's called, but we didn't pay for it and had to go to the post office and show proof of disability).

Looking online it says that those who are exempt for vehicle tax due to disability don't have to pay, so is that us?

Sorry for sounding so silly, I'm extremely anxious and can't think straight.

Do you have a blue badge? Blue badge holders don't have to pay the toll but I'm not sure if there is anything you have to do on the day of your crossing to confirm this.

I’ve dealt with this, it is ONLY higher exempt disability - so your car also has to be exempt from paying vehicle tax and must be higher rate. My dad was on the medium rate due to stupid DWP and got fined as they downgraded him from higher. We appealed and won but that was because he also got awarded higher rate from it.

@hopelessromantique yes enhanced rate, do have a blue badge now, but had to apply separately as higher rate mobility doesn't entitle you automatically to a blue badge as standard does. We don't pay for tax on the car at all due to this.

So the enhanced rate is OK then? It says they check the registration when you go through, so that should be OK then, I guess they have access to confirm I get this.

Never done the Dartford Crossing before, but have read scary threads on here, so wanted to be less anxious.

Thank you.

@Aria20 yes have blue badge and am exempt from vehicle tax due to enhanced rate mobility. It says they check the registration plate, but as things go wrong so often for me I panic a lot.

No idea about the disabled tax etc but when I had another question about crossing payments, they were quite responsive and helpful on the customer service email, so it could be worth emailing to check if you're not sure about something. That was pre-covid, though, so might all be changed now!

Think it's sorted. After trying to find an email address (as suggested by @BrunchBunch ) I only found dartfordcrossingonline, so sent them an email, but realised they are not affiliated with it. 😳

Went to the official government site, clicked to pay, put in registration and it came up with a message saying our car is exempt. So screenshot it, just in case the ANPR cameras get it wrong or something. So it is impossible to pay it for us anyway.

Thank you all for your help Flowers

If you receive higher rate mobility PIP and your car is exempt from road tax, then you don’t pay the Dartford crossing toll charge.

Aria20 · 24/08/2023 15:31

Glad you got it sorted. Yes the automated number plate thing definitely works as it should - I get a local resident discount on crossings which is automatically confirmed by vehicle registration being registered to a local address and I've not had any issues!

Glad you got it sorted. I can't remember where I found the email address, but I think it was from the government site somewhere.
