Me! I'm waiting to find out if I passed matha GCSE, 20 years after I failed it at 16!

Ahh that takes real guts and determination! I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you Smile

Copasetic · 24/08/2023 07:38

I'm not waiting for GCSE results (two too old and one too young) but I totally agree that you are not worried about the results as such but the impact on your child. I'd imagine most people would be anxious about a big event that is going to make their child very very happy or very very sad - surely that is human nature. Whether that then reflects on a person's ability to sleep is pretty individual.

BorgQueen · 24/08/2023 07:39

Teachers are worried too, DD has just messaged me to go and pick up DGS (4) at 8.00 instead of 8.30 because she wants to get into school early, she is Head of Maths. She’s dreading it.

Ignore the goady poster.

It's totally normal and caring to worry about the results (and how your teen will react) even if as sensible parents we know it won't be the end of the world. We're still going to have to guide a teen through their emotions if they didn't do as well as they expected. And it might affect their very near future if it means a college place is lost.

I agree it will never be the end of the world. As a recruiter I am certainly happy to overlook GCSEs if the applicant has shown their potential at other times /in other ways, because I know they are a snapshot in time and that being good at exams isn't a core workplace skill.

But it doesn't mean it isn't natural and human to wake in the night if we know our child has a bit of a landmark day.

Thinking of all the teachers too x

Good luck @TheFutureFreaksMeOut !
I’m another peri - awake early anyway. I’m proud of DS who has worked really hard, I hope his grades reflect that. I know he’ll be disappointed if they are lower than his predictions.
It would be an odd parent who isn’t a bit anxious about an important day in their young person’s life and getting their game face on to handle the fall out, however it goes?

user76541055773 · 24/08/2023 07:51

Good luck everyone. I’m in Scotland so ours are all done, but feeling much solidarity for anyone waiting today. This year’s kids were so hard hit due to covid, with lost learning and increased anxiety. I wish every one of them the very best.

voxnihili · 24/08/2023 08:01

@StopProcrastinatingGerald yes schools get them the day before but it is just for the exam officer and headteacher. Everyone else has to wait until the Thursday. I spent yesterday stuffing envelopes.

Petaldust · 24/08/2023 08:02

Not nervous exactly but impatient. DS confident of passing everything but doesn’t expect high grades. He did the bare minimum throughout which is his approach to everything!

Motherofasmallpony · 24/08/2023 08:09

Well I’m the lead invigilator - the person that hand held 180 + students through all their exams. I am nervous for them too 🙏
my turn with DS next year.

DressMadeOfSeashells · 24/08/2023 08:14

May I join in? I've been up since 5am thinking about my daughter's results. She's calm, I'm pretending to be calm but I've been on a mad cleaning frenzy this week to keep my mind off things.

Good luck to all of your kids!

loveyoutothemoonandtosaturn · 24/08/2023 08:18

Following this as it'll be me next year and i know I won't sleep at all the night before! Hope everyone's kids do great, pop back here and let us all know how they do!

TeenDivided · 24/08/2023 08:32

I've got the backlog of ironing cleared.

StopProcrastinatingGerald · 24/08/2023 08:37

Now sitting in the car outside the school. 25 minutes early. At ds’s request.

Awww Best of Luck

I got a terrible E for CSE English 1976 but in 1999 I done a one Year Introduction to Computing Course and the Tutor also ran GCSE English lessons for some of us.
Ended up with an A for Spoken English (talked about The Titanic then answered some questions from fellow students) and B for Coursework. Was ever so Proud.

FuckYouEzekiel · 24/08/2023 09:09

We home ed so DS14 sat some early. We have gone camping as a distraction. Good luck everyone.

tooanxious · 24/08/2023 09:26

Outstanding here! Unexpected. OMG I am so relieved and delighted for him!

overthehillswegoo · 24/08/2023 09:45

Has anybody's DC not collected them yet?
Still waiting here for them to decide to go

DD hasn't twigged it is results day today. I will mention it at 10 and then she can phone or we can do a 1 hour round trip for the 1 result.

I will suggest we phone.

overthehillswegoo · 24/08/2023 09:59

@TeenDivided is there a reason she's not bothered/aware?
I think mine is just too nervous

Ours can go in from 10am.
Ds is meeting his friends at 10:30. The results collection has paled into insignificance compared with going swimming with his friends. I'm going to suggest we leave shortly.

She has no good sense of time / dates.
Anyway, we phoned.
Not a pass. Sad
She did well just to make it into the exams, but still disheartening.

LadyShimura · 24/08/2023 10:09

I've failed at concealing my disappointment at DD, and spent the last few minutes crying.

I made a deal with her if she got certain grades, we'd get a cat. She hasnt done that so I've had to tell her we arent getting one.

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 24/08/2023 10:12

I got mine… touching 40 and redid science. 6

DD1 did a resit and failed both so will try again next year. She isn’t bothered. Not academic and struggles so has accepted it’s just a box ticking exercise.

DD2 is on her way to collect. Stressing as she needs certain grades for A level, but missed half an hour of one of her needed exams. School said they would put in for something but have said it would at best only give her a small change of accepted and not reflect on what she could have achieved. Just hoping it’s enough. She’s missed almost a year of years 10/11 due to personal issues so she’s really worried.
