Anxious for GCSE results this morning!

@GADDay why not start your own thread instead of trying to derail a supportive one?

My DD has needed masses of support over the past few years, and passing her resit will be a big deal.
When your child's hopes and dreams rest on results it is perfectly normal for a caring parent to worry.

SomewhereWithSomeone · 24/08/2023 06:06

And last week, when one of my kids got their A level results, yes, his dad couldn’t sleep either. Loving parents you see. 😉

FawnFrenchieMum · 24/08/2023 06:08

I’ve been trying to get back to sleep for a couple of hours but given up now.

DS is not academic, he’s dyslexic, ADHD & ASD. Massively let down by his school. I really wish we had got him tutors earlier as he worked so hard with them but both said they wished they had had a little bit more time with him. I’m just praying he’s scrapped a 4 in maths & English.

The thought of everyone asking how he did if we have to say he failed them is making me really anxious for him. We’ve had lots of mental health struggles but he’s in such a good place at the minute I would hate for it to send him backwards.

Me! I'm waiting to find out if I passed matha GCSE, 20 years after I failed it at 16!

You do know that straight after collecting your result you must go straight to Reading Festival from school to celebrate!
Let us know how it goes OP.

A good way of looking at it could be not that he failed, instead that he didn't pass this time. Gives a more positive spin (remind me of this if DS doesn't get a 4 for maths)

@tooanxious oh yes absolutely, and I’ve been doing that type of prep talk all week with DS but ultimately he knows he needs a 4 to ‘pass’. Probably doesn’t help my DN is the same age and super academic (obviously I’ll be very pleased for him and his results what ever ours are) so can hear the PIL now telling us and everyone else all about DNs results.

He has a job offer for Sept which isn’t reliant on his grades but I need to work out if and how he can resit along side this if he doesn’t pass and also convince him that he needs to do this even though he’s got a starting offer for the future.

Gnittensmum · 24/08/2023 06:23

@GADDay

Yep, you’re allowed your opinion. And we’re allowed to tell you to jog on. That’s the way the world works.

grass321 · 24/08/2023 06:24

Nervous. We got history last week which was a grade lower than he was expecting so it's felt a long wait for the rest.

Unfortunately my husband left me just before the exams so I'm crossing everything that it hasn't affected my son's grades. (Although we can all have bad papers, the what if is hard to shake off).

TeenDivided · 24/08/2023 06:26

@FawnFrenchieMum I found a good phrase was 'they have what they need for next steps'.

There are resits for maths and Eng Lang early November. Your local FE college should allow access but it will be more complicated if not attending.

We have been working our way through the Level 2 Functional skills English guide this summer. It seems to be more straightforward than the GCSE. Might be worth a look if needed.

lurchersforlife · 24/08/2023 06:30

I'm head of a core subject so have this every year, but this year with ds in the mix is something else. He did brilliantly in the mocks and throughout but puts so much pressure on himself it's scary. He could get an excellent set of results and be disappointed. I know that sounds ridiculous.

Only 2 hours now....

Gnittensmum · 24/08/2023 06:32

@GADDay

yowzers! Your history on Mumsnet reveals a bunch of very unhappy people in your house!! Maybe some more time spent nurturing your kids and less time telling other parents what to worry about could have avoided that?

Just my opinion of course 🙂

Radiatorvalves · 24/08/2023 06:36

Didn’t sleep at all well. DS is away on a school trip and DH at work…. So I’ll be opening the email on my own. Very different from last weeks A level results.

voxnihili · 24/08/2023 06:36

My sleepless night was Tuesday, waiting for our students results to be available for me to download. I downloaded them all at 1am yesterday and went to bed but then couldn’t sleep as my brain was just processing it all.

Spent yesterday preparing everything to hand out to students today and was exhausted so thought I’d definitely sleep but no, another sleepless night! Off for a McDonalds breakfast on my way into school today.

Good luck to all today, hope they get what they have worked for.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 24/08/2023 06:45

@TeenDivided Indeed that is a great phrase which I have used in the past particularly for older relatives and nosey people who like compare Wink

Whitecup24 · 24/08/2023 06:46

Yes me! Away on family holiday so going to breakfast then an anxious wait on the sun loungers for the email to come though.

my beautiful daughter has been through so much, and had so much time off school and I’m just so proud she got herself back into school and if she’s got the grades she needs for the next step it will be all because of her hard work and resilience, if not all will be ok and we will find her another way to get ambition to be a lawyer.

personally I hate the school system in the UK (I was put up a year then dropped out at uni stage and now run my own businesses) but hey ho she needs it for law so let’s get to it!

lots of love to everyone waiting today xx

FawnFrenchieMum · 24/08/2023 06:47

@TeenDivided I like that one! Thank you very much!

Me too- another peri- moment here and can't relax and go back to sleep. Dd worked so hard and I just don't want her to be disappointed. Have been reading in the news this morning that top grades have dropped significantly. She needs a 7 to do maths and I would say it was borderline .
Good luck to everyone.

It’s not that the grades have dropped, it’s just that they aren’t elevated as much as they have been the last 3 years.
They reduced the amount of elevation last year and have reduced it further this year. Next years results will have no grade elevation at all.

Love Mumsnet. Never a varying opinion allowed - lest it be a goader or troll.

Seriously - get a grip people. Losing sleep over children's exam results - is mad, in MY opinion.

I wonder if the father's are worrying. I'd guess not.

Our children are not benefiting from you living vicariously through them. They feel your worry, internalise it as pressure and nothing good comes from that.

There is A LOT to be said about letting your 15/16 year old tread their own path. They need to face their challenges with resilience and take responsibility for themselves at some point.

Again, just my opinion. It's allowed on a public forum. 🤷‍♀️

I don't think anyone is worrying about the actual results per se. I think parents are worrying about the impact of those results on their children.

They are hoping that their children are pleased with their results, that they get to do the subjects they want to do in September, that they feel their hard work has paid off.

I really feel sorry for any 16 year old whose parents don't care about these things. These children do exist and it's heartbreaking. And no that's not hyperbole, because a lack of care about exam results is symptomatic of a wider lack of parental interest in the child.

Just so that you are clear, teachers would treat a lack of interest in your child's schooling and education as a red flag for safeguarding

IheartNiles · 24/08/2023 07:26

Good luck to them all today, this was us last week waiting for A levels. I worked late the night before and DD did a late shift to exhaust selves so that we got some sleep. Was still awake at 4am (me)

thisdress1234 · 24/08/2023 05:57

@TheFutureFreaksMeOut
Oh good luck
I failed mine and am tempted to give it ago. I don't need it for work just want to pass it!

Same here, it's just something I wanted to do for myself. I would encourage you to do it. I actually enjoyed it this time round!

2.5 hours and counting until I know!

I’m really worried. The plan is I drive dd to school. She gets her envelope comes back to the car and then hopefully she goes back in to be with her friends. Alternatively we drive off and start a new life somewhere else.

What a thing to do just before exams! I hope your son has a very happy day Smile

Good luck to everyone, including all the teachers who had a sleepless night!

StopProcrastinatingGerald · 24/08/2023 07:35

@lurchersforlife I thought the schools knew the results the day before? Is that a myth? DS and I were assuming that the schools got the results on the Wednesday and put them in envelopes ready for Thursday morning
