What happens if the postcode is wrong?

Parcel sent with Royal Mail. It hasn’t arrived and I’ve checked the proof of posting and the postcode is wrong.
like instead of BA11 1AB. it says BS11 1AB (post office is in BS11). I’m reasonably sure I wrote the address on right but you never know bits possible I didn’t.

will it get there eventually if the rest of the address is right?

Royal Mail delivered a birthday present to my house with the postcode totally wrong. It was from my kid’s grandparents who have very little contact and they got the postcode completely mixed up, but my road is the only road in the entire UK with this street name so Royal Mail got the parcel to me.

On the other hand, I miss typed my street name (swapped 2 letters round) on an order delivered by Hermes and they refused to deliver it even though it was obvious what was me meant.

So… Royal Mail might deliver it if it’s obvious what address was intended.

I have no knowledge beyond a news article I saw once about royal mail. Apparently the postcodes are machine read. Any that can't be machine read are scanned and sent to people who wil try and find the correct postcode based on the address. So in theory it should get there but will be delayed.

I've received things that have the wrong postcode on so I can't see why it wouldn't arrive

Bookbeb · 23/08/2023 18:17

I've had this and instead of being automatically sorted it had to go to manually be sorted, it arrived but with a bit of a delay

ScarlettSunset · 23/08/2023 18:17

I think it is likely to get there but may be a little delayed.
I once sent a Christmas card to a friend and managed to put the wrong postcode and the wrong house number (I inadvertently mixed up the house number with one of the numbers in the postcode). I realised what I had done later that day and rushed to send a second card addressed correctly. My friend received both cards.

I did this once (put BS9 instead of B9). It did eventually turn up via Bristol.

Oh I do hope so. You’ve reassured me a bit thanks. I feel like a bit of an arse of it was me who got it wrong.

I think it'll arrive eventually.

BerthaKit · 23/08/2023 18:21

The postcode on the receipt (the wrong one) doesn’t actually exist so hopefully that’ll flag too.

Yes it will get there but will probably be delayed by a couple of days. When we moved DH forget to change the postcode on his union membership account. We received all the letters but the postcode had been hand corrected by with a pen. Royal Mail are very good at getting things to recipients.

OhLookIveChangedMyNameAgain · 23/08/2023 18:32

I’ve received cards from relatives who have got my postcode mixed up with someone else’s - it should arrive.

Akire · 23/08/2023 18:41

It will arrive but take longer. The machine will send it to the post code area. When it arrives in sorting office they will realise there is no street in that post code and look up correct one. You are far more likely get one digit wrong in postcode than both house and street number wrong. Must happen bad hand writting all the time!

Hi
So, the shipping address is correct from this parcel from royal mail. But the postcode I typed in wrong for the billing address. My parcel is now being re-routed, will it still come to the right address. All I did was accidentally put BA9 instead of BA2.
