Hereford - London - Cardiff

After a bit of travel advice.

My son lives in Camden and I live in Hereford I am looking to take him to Cardiff tomorrow but he doesn't drive.

Where would be the best/easiest place to meet him just outside London that he can use public transport to get too?

In fairness, the OP was planning to drive.

Cardiff to Waterloo took me 4 hours to drive a week or so ago. Would have been 2.5 hours on the train (but upwards of £250 for 2 of us.). I get the train when work are paying.

Yes you can travel from the capital of England to the capital of Wales by train. I get that you might be 'new to public transport' but I'm wondering if you are new to the planet?

I don't need your outright rudeness. Living in London is completely different to the countryside, and my original question wasn't even to do with whether or not he could get from London to Cardiff, but whether I could find somewhere to pick him up. 🖕

There’s a being new to public transport and then there’s not even doing the most basic google….

And even if OP didn't know surely her son would?

Silverdogblue · 22/08/2023 15:35

Bonkers. MN has changed!

This has to be a wind up 😂

That wasn't what the question was about oh my bejesus!!

Oddest poster thread ever.

SirVixofVixHall · 22/08/2023 15:38

Tube from Camden Town to Paddington. Trains to Cardiff from Paddington, there is one an hour most of the day.
Or he gets the train to you in Hereford and you drive to Cardiff together.
Surely he has thought of this though, if he lives in Camden and doesn’t drive ?

I lived and drove in London for many years. It’s honestly no fun anymore. Besides congestion charge and ULEZ the smart section on the M4 between London and Reading is an absolute ball ache. Then the 20mph limits across most of London.

Get the train.

Timeless01 · 22/08/2023 15:39

Do you still want to drive op?

Also are you ok?

I was responding to your post where you said 'oh I didn't realise there was one' when someone suggested a London-Cardiff train. I guess I was being rather rude in my post, but it came from a place of astonishment.

I hope you work something out. If it were me, I'd just google for info.

Hollyhead · 22/08/2023 15:40

Sorry for being a bit facetious @thoughtprovokingname but it’s just a bit of a stretch that you’d consider driving out of your way and your son hasn’t even pointed out he can get a train. I kind of get that you weren’t in train mindset but unless there’s a massive backstory your DS needs to up his logistics game!

mykookachew · 22/08/2023 15:44

Such an odd thread 🤦‍♀️

Hobnobswantshernameback · 22/08/2023 15:46

I have never caught a train from London to Newcastle
however should the need arise I would assume such a facility exists and would Google and get the pertinent information
Cardiff is a city of a over 250,000 people
but yeah we all still live in caves and have no direct rail link

nothingjustaninchident · 22/08/2023 15:49

money is a major issue with trains and £66 for a single is such an insane price for people who may not have that.
to say the poster is "new to the earth" isn't very fair as living somewhere like hereford where there aren't readily available train or buses at all is quite unfair, and downright rude !!!

nothingjustaninchident · 22/08/2023 15:50

and the original question wasn't even about getting from london to cardiff, it was about a pickup point on the outskirts of london, so some of you obviously need to learn how to read !!!

Since when aren’t there trains and buses in Hereford? I’ve caught both to / from there!

Ah you haven't RTFT

HelpaFriend85 · 22/08/2023 15:53

OP there is a website on split train fares or even if you went to the station (or your son did) you can buy split train fares you essentially stay on the same train but have split tickets and makes the journey cheaper

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 22/08/2023 15:54

Sorry, I mis-read and reported my reply. London to Cardiff is even easier on the train! If you're driving in from Hereford there's little point in stopping anywhere on the way to collect him, you may as well meet at Cardiff Central.

From my original reply though...

There is plenty of parking in the city centre, including the train station car park itself (I'd use the one around the front rather than the one at the back).

Just a heads up that Cardiff is one of the pilot cities for 20mph on all residential roads so as soon as you're off the main routes you need to be aware that 20mph is the default...and there are often speed cameras around.

Yes, but driving from Hereford to London then back to Cardiff ain't gonna be cheap either Hmm

TheSaltyPath · 22/08/2023 15:56

Meet in Cardiff. He gets the direct train from Paddington. You get the direct train from Hereford. Easiest meet-up ever.

"somewhere like Hereford" Grin

Hereford is a city. It has a train station with trains to London, Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff... It's not a poky one horse arse end of nowhere village FFS!

nothingjustaninchident · 22/08/2023 15:57

@GirlsWithGuitars as someone who also lives in hereford, there is no regular buses or trains in the area, so we aren't used to extended public transport systems. that's not because we're stupid or we were born yesterday but because we aren't used to it.
