Did menopause happen at the same age as your mum?

Is it true that you often follow your mothers timeline for menopause?

I know my grandma was early 40s, my mum was done and dusted by 43, so anecdotally yes. But I've not reached that age yet so can't confirm lol.

MilkofMagnesia · 21/08/2023 19:09

My Mum was about 57, I was 53.

ButterflyBitch · 21/08/2023 19:13

I hope so. My mum was 41 and I’m peri meno so keeping my fingers crossed.

@ButterflyBitch , what symptoms do you have for Peri...I've been thinking I have peri for the last few weeks. I'm on the depo to stop my periods as they are terrible bit the time I'm due on my hormones are all over the place..tears and anger.
Do you take anything for it.
Sorry for the questions

No.

Mum early 40s, me 54

Summerhillsquare · 21/08/2023 19:35

Mine did, and her mum's too!

SlippinJanie · 21/08/2023 19:49

Don't know when my mum started hers but I was 45 & my periods stopped when she died. Just a coincidence but it feels like a weird one.

TaigaSno · 21/08/2023 19:50

My grandmother and great-grandmother died fairly young so cannot compare too far back.
My mum started age 40/early 40s.
Me, started age 36/37.
My sister currently mid 40s with no sign of it yet.

ShadowPuppets · 21/08/2023 19:53

Watching with interest - my grandmother started the menopause in her late 30s, mum got hers early 40s. It was a factor in me deciding if I wanted kids it needed to be pre 35. Now 34 and done with having a family, so while I’m not wild about the idea of going through it if I do get it early I’ll feel vindicated for having kids about 4 years earlier than all my friends.

YouMustBeHotYourPantsAreOnFire · 21/08/2023 19:53

DM 40
Me surgical menopause 45
Sister (older) Menopause 48

mondaytosunday · 21/08/2023 20:12

My mother had a bad time, they discovered she had cancer so had a hysterectomy at 52. I went through it at 55/56. I started my periods earlier, at 11.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 21/08/2023 20:13

I don’t know as we don’t know what was menopause and what was early onset Alzheimer’s with my mum, but my sister and I have been very similar to each other

mondaytosunday · 21/08/2023 20:14

Should add that while she had an awful time, I barely noticed it - periods just got lighter and further apart then stopped. No other symptoms.

BIossomtoes · 21/08/2023 20:14

My mum’s menopause was late - mid 50s. So was mine.

TiramisuTastesDreamy · 21/08/2023 20:15

Yes - mum & her sisters had menopause in mid forties - so have I ….

Hi yes I’m on hrt. Symptoms were worsening allergies, crazy itchy skin, exhaustion, brain fog, anxiety, irritability, joint and muscle aches and pains, pmt went mental and had a week or more of painful boobs beforehand my period, low
libido, periods went a bit skewiff but nothing major. They’re worse now. Wasn’t until I started getting hot flushes that I realised what was going on 🤦🏻‍♀️

Escapingtherealityoflife · 21/08/2023 20:19

No, Mum 46, me 51.

DinosApple · 21/08/2023 20:25

Mum 45, I'm waiting to see. Definitely my hormones are fluctuating noticeably now - sore boobs, PMT, night sweats etc.

Mum has osteoporosis because of early menopause, taking HRT could have helped with that but it didn't agree with her.

ArcticBells · 21/08/2023 20:32

No, my mother was 51 (average age), I was 45

Octomingo · 21/08/2023 20:43

We all knew about my mum's menopause for about 10 years. Way too much information for a teen. I feel like she may have started it around my age, but I'm not really getting any signs yet. She started her periods a good few years before I started mine though. I remember the endless conversations she had about evening primrose and flooding.

VikingLady · 21/08/2023 20:52

No, I take after my dad's family. My body is basically a younger version of my paternal grandmother's, albeit with my mother's digestive issues.

So far I'm like them.

LindorDoubleChoc · 21/08/2023 20:57

Don't know, never discussed it
