Was I wrong to say this?

Just sitting having a cup of coffee with dad, he's watching the news. Eating a small chocolate and it went down the wrong way and I started coughing and spluttering. I have a very narrow windpipe and am waiting in an op for it so I was gasping for air a bit, and felt quite panicked.

As I got to near the end of my fit I said "I think I'm alright...". Dad looked at me "what? How was I supposed to help you? I can't help you. Am I in the wrong for that?"

Still coughing and a little taken aback I said, "you could've asked if I was alright." To which he responded "do you have a problem with me?"

Again, taken aback I asked what else I've said to make him think that. Apparently he can tell me loads but "I won't tell you them right now."

Is it me or does it all seem like an overreaction?

Does he know what to do in the event of choking? Some people just freeze and do nothing although a bit of empathy afterwards wouldn't have gone amiss. Is there a back history to this?

I wonder if he went on the defensive because he froze and then felt bad for not doing anything to help you? Still not nice for you OP but I have seen that reaction before, especially with men.

@Ratfinkstinkypink - no back story. We've had our disagreements in the past, like any other father/daughter, but that's about it.

@HerAvatar - I guess that could be it. I don’t think he even looked up from the TV.

I was just so shocked by his reaction. I'll be getting the silent treatment now.
