Should an insect sting be this painful??!!

This afternoon I was stung on my toe by what I thought was a wasp but may have been a hornet- I saw it fly away and it looked pretty large. It was excruciating at the time but the thing is it hasn’t got any better at all in the last 7 hours- the only thing that helps is putting ice/frozen peas on it but as soon as I remove them it’s totally excruciating again. Surely it should have stopped hurting by now? Or am I just a wimp?! Honestly it’s one of the most painful things I’ve ever felt!

Am going to call the GP in the morning if no better, but imagine I won’t be getting much sleep tonight…

No other symptoms that suggest an allergic reaction.

Has anyone else had this?!

Some stings can be mega painful - weaver fish for a start!

Hope you get some seleep.

Badbudgeter · 20/08/2023 22:19

Is it red/ inflamed? Could it possibly of been an Asian hornet, they are massive 2”. Apparently they are showing up in the UK. It feels like a red hot poker being held against your skin.

Witchbitch20 · 20/08/2023 22:19

Have you removed the sting?
If not that can continue to make it painful.

Antihistamine’s may help.

Thanks all. I’ve looked really carefully and no sign of the sting. I’ve taken anti histamines and painkillers which didn’t seem to do anything.

@Badbudgeter it could have been I guess- reading up on them they seem to be around Kent and while I’m not there, I’m not a million miles away. It certainly feels like a red hot poker!!

Wasp is really painful. If you don't have any swelling, hives or all over symptoms like vomiting, dizziness, low blood pressure then it's not an allergy.

Witchbitch20 · 21/08/2023 17:40

How are you today @Katandmouse ?

Switcherooza · 21/08/2023 19:52

Try getting some topical numbing ointment from the pharmacist, something with lidocaine in.

Angstyaug · 21/08/2023 20:08

I was stung by a wasp this evening though abroad on holiday. It was really painful but I'd brought one of those electric clickers that you apply to your skin. Amazing relief - I was seriously impressed. Too late for you now but worth having in house for the future

I got stung on my pinkie by a wasp last Tuesday. It was instantly very painful, and very painful for about three days after, slowly easing after that. Even washing my hands was painful. It's still a little itchy but the swelling and redness has gone now.

It was my first wasp sting (disturbed a nest) and I hope I don't get any more! (Wish I'd thought about the clicker thing as I have one of those!)

Ireallywantsomechips · 21/08/2023 20:37

I got semi stung by a bee once. I say semi stung because it got caught in my tights so I easily brushed the stinger off don’t think it went too far in.

That said, I was in so much pain I had to go home from work! I was so embarrassed but I just couldn’t concentrate and wanted to sit at home with ice on it!

Helenahandkart · 21/08/2023 20:49

I had several wasp stings recently after picking up a nest. They were SO painful for 24 hours, and then itched like a bastard for several more days. I’d never had a wasp sting before and was really surprised by how bad they were.
Antihistamines made zero difference.

Katandmouse · 21/08/2023 21:19

It’s loads better today thanks @Witchbitch20 - just itchy now.

Interesting to hear others’ stories- I honestly always thought wasp stings were pretty minor but have changed my mind now!!

Will get one of those electric clickers @Angstyaug, thanks for the tip.

My next job is to convince my DS, who was already scared of wasps, to ever go out in the garden again 😫

I had the same, it was so painful I couldn’t speak at times! 😊

A friend was recently stung by a hornet and was in agony. She's got a high tolerance for pain too, and she said it was awful.
there's no stinger from a hornet, but it was very inflamed and painful.
