Garage machine letting air out of my tyres

Noticed my tyre looked low so went to top it up with air at our local petrol station

Except the number was going down, not up… it was letting air out my tyres! Told the cashier in the kiosk who said it ‘goes on the blink sometimes’ and looked unbothered. I got it home to use the manual pump but I thought those machines were supposed to be accurate and reliable?

They’re often flakey! My car has a tyre pressure warning light that goes off all the time so I often check them and the machines at the garage are equally as dodgy! They
go up then down, then sometimes just read error messages!

Weird one, but had you set the correct pressure for your tires? Last time I went I totally forgot to change the pressure - was so confused when it let air out of my tires, only to realise whoever used it before me obviously needed it to be lower than I did!

I've had this before but just with 1 tyre. Ended up emptier than when it started

Yeah set it correct. It was going up, hovering at 23, dropped to 21, back to 22, then to 19, then 18… so I took it off - they’re supposed to be 30! Couldn’t risk it going flat entirely.

@VitaminNinja

That's so annoying!! Sounds like the machine was not maintaining pressure? Bad that the employee knew it does that, surely it's a safety risk if you've pumped up three tires properly then deflated one? 😳

I've had this happen before. Was at a Tesco petrol station/supermarket. They put an out of order sign on it afterwards.

Yeah exactly. He did come out to put a sign on it after I alerted him to it but it’s not safe at all is it and just not great all round, given how important tyres are!!!

Stuff breaks, and they won't know it's broken until someone reports it - even if they test daily it could still pack in half way through the day.
They're probably on minimum wage and not that arsed if something breaks, they'll just tell their manager.

Not the end of the world, but I agree it's annoying!

DownNative · 20/08/2023 20:56

Just get your own tyre air compressor. They don't break the bank!

I had this too. It topped up three fine and then just kept letting air out of the fourth!
