Does anyone else hate going for walks?

I have disabilities so it can be difficult and painful for me especially as paths and pavements are often so uneven and I really struggle with hills but I also find it incredibly boring. If there's some wildlife to look at it then I can enjoy it for a bit and I can enjoy walking in cities if we stop regularly to see shops and museums or interesting statues but otherwise I hate it and find it utterly tedious.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Yes, me. It’s bearable if I’m with a friend and we can have a good chat along the way but going for a walk on my own bores the life out of me.

EmpressSoleil · 20/08/2023 15:09

I like walking in nature or around a new or favorite city. Just walking round my own boring area! No. I don't like walking for walkings sake. There has to be some reason/purpose. You will never hear me say "I'm popping out for a walk" 😂so I agree with you.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 20/08/2023 15:10

Sorry - I love a good walk. I'm lucky to live somewhere semi rural and can be away from the hustle bustle in minutes. I can understand if your mobility is not good it won't be enjoyable.

If I’m uncomfortable or in pain I hate them.

Russooooo · 20/08/2023 15:12

No. I love it. I don’t even really mind where. Lovely walk in the country. Stroll through a new city. Wander through suburbs. I genuinely just love walking. Audiobooks help!

BlackberryCrumbs · 20/08/2023 15:12

I've always needed a purpose to enjoy a walk.

Could be wanting to walk 3 miles for fitness. Or wanting to get to a certain place to see the view. Or even just walking the beach for an hour with dc because I know they need the fresh air after a week of rain, or whatever.

We got ddog a year ago and generally I find walks, even repetitive ones round the local park, much more enjoyable now. Firstly the purpose thing, secondly because she's fun to watch!

OddBoots · 20/08/2023 15:14

I have disabilities too and at one point stopped being able to walk until I had some neurosurgery. For this reason I make myself walk, on its own it can be pretty boring and painful but with an audiobook or some podcasts in one ear I can enjoy it more.

Gnomegnomegnome · 20/08/2023 15:14

I love walking but I do live in a really beautiful area.

modgepodge · 20/08/2023 15:15

No disability here but I have always found it really boring. Many a weekend was ruined as a child with a walk.

I don’t mind walking to get somewhere, but walking round in a circle for the sake of it? No. If I want to catch up with a friend I’d rather go for coffee. one of the many reasons I’ll never own a dog 😂

AndrexPuppy · 20/08/2023 15:16

Sorry no. I love it. Which is good as I have a very active dog, so I’m out for 2+ hours every day. Sometimes alone, sometimes with DH/DC/both. I enjoy all of them but the solo ones are probably my favourite. I can just put my headphones in, listen to a podcast or audiobook and go at my own pace, as well as having 1-1 bonding time with the pooch. It’s good for my body and mind.

I can understand how it wouldn’t be enjoyable if you have painful mobility issues though.

CeriB82 · 20/08/2023 15:19

I love walks ! I live in snowdonia so endless walks available. Prefer going alone in the wind and rain than a sunny day. Less people i see the better. Gets too busy in the summer so i tend to do the mountains in the winter

Saverage · 20/08/2023 15:33

I'd find walking very dull without podcasts.

Chickenkeev · 20/08/2023 15:34

Disabled here too but prior to that i didn't like walks. Horses for courses etc. (I am totally lazy tho, morto!)

Hbh17 · 20/08/2023 15:37

Yes, me - I don't see the point. I can walk around a city for hours, because there's lots to see, but walking in the countryside is just tedious.

IthinkIamAnAlien · 20/08/2023 15:39

I hate walking and it's got worse since I developed a knee problem. Even before that, I've found walking boring and slow, all that tedious toiling upwards just so you can turn around and struggle downwards! Ugh.

stbrandonsboat · 20/08/2023 15:53

I have hypermobility and a dodgy foot/ankle and have to wear orthotics in my shoes. I can't walk on uneven ground at all. I overheat very easily, even in the colder weather, so I find it uncomfortable. Walking is the only exercise I'll do so I have to force myself to do it. Dh comes with me so we just chat. I like seeing the trees and birds, but it gets boring.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/08/2023 16:01

I've always liked it, but I can see why it doesn't appeal. I liked it more when I was a child as the road I grew up on was on the side of a mountain, so I could easily get off the road onto empty mountainside with great views. Now I walk through the suburbs but quite like looking at front gardens to see what they're growing. I don't enjoy walking the dog much as it's hard to hit a consistent pace because he wants to keep stopping to sniff things. I find getting a good rhythm calms my mind. I don't like sunshine though so I tend to do my walking from dusk to darkness, there are also fewer people around at that time which I prefer.

SwedishEdith · 20/08/2023 16:09

I really want to like walking but I don't. Well, not around the neighbourhood (which is perfectly pleasant but I've seen it all after all those lockdown walks). Cites and walking on holiday to new places are fine. But just "going for a walk" with no purpose (and I don't see fitness as a purpose but a chore) is really dull

icebearforpresident · 20/08/2023 16:13

I have never understood the point of going for a walk. I will walk anywhere I need to go but I’m not going to go out walking for the sake of it.

You see it on here every year at Xmas, people talk about getting up, doing the presents then going out for a ‘lovely walk’. Fuck that, I can’t think of anything worse. I’m getting up, doing the presents and cracking open the first bottle of Buck’s Fizz by 10am before falling asleep on the couch after dinner.

Burningthroughthesky · 20/08/2023 16:20

I need a daily walk, like a dog. Clears my head. I wouldn't enjoy it if is was painful though.

Silkiebunny · 20/08/2023 16:20

I find walking quite boring unless it's somewhere like rainforest or very interesting. Used to hate boring walks as a child.

Floralnomad · 20/08/2023 16:22

I walk when I’m at places and I walk my dog , the idea of just going out of the house for a walk locally would not interest me in the slightest .

megletthesecond · 20/08/2023 16:23

I walk almost everywhere (work, shops, gym) but I never 'go for a walk'. If I must just walk for exercise then I take my litter picker.

Findyourneutralspace · 20/08/2023 16:23

I have hypermobility too, which makes the skin on my feet super soft and I always end up with blisters on the balls of my feet. I’ve tried every combination of shoes/boots/socks but after a mile or so my feet start to burn.

TeenLifeMum · 20/08/2023 16:24

Love walking our dog. Getting out for a walk clears my head but I also sit in the garden as much as possible. Not keen on sitting in the lounge during the day.
