Does anyone else hate going for walks?

I have disabilities so it can be difficult and painful for me especially as paths and pavements are often so uneven and I really struggle with hills but I also find it incredibly boring. If there's some wildlife to look at it then I can enjoy it for a bit and I can enjoy walking in cities if we stop regularly to see shops and museums or interesting statues but otherwise I hate it and find it utterly tedious.

Does anyone else feel this way?

I feel silly just going for a walk without a purpose. Its alright going to the shop or whatever or taking my borrow dog out but plodding off on my own for a walk's sake I feel daft. Plus it's must just streets where I live.

ItLooksLikeChickenSoItMustBeChicken · 20/08/2023 16:27

Me too. My husband often suggests going for a walk - unless it's to a cafe, pub, or perhaps a nice park with a lake or something, I can't see the point. I'm disabled and can't walk very well, so I wouldn't want to struggle to walk somewhere just for the sake of it.

Yes so boring if no purpose

I have no disabilities and I bloody HATE it. I don't see the point in wandering aimlessly with no purpose other than it's healthy.

Lupin61 · 20/08/2023 16:51

I have to have a podcast or music to listen to or I can find it a bit boring. I prefer walking alone though than having to chat the whole time to someone else. It’s nice to zone out and have some time to myself

emmetgirl · 20/08/2023 16:59

I am on my feet walking around ALL DAY at work so when I'm not at work the last bloody thing I want to do is WALK.

Noizettely · 20/08/2023 17:10

I like walking.

But I am not keen on cream cakes, not having a sweet tooth.

NoSquirrels · 20/08/2023 17:10

Nope, absolutely love walking. But I can quite understand that if you have mobility issues it’s not as fun.

Spookyseasonmum · 20/08/2023 17:24

I love walks but I have a chronic pain condition and any unevenness, incline or steps is absolute agony, especially those bits of the pavement where it slopes down sideways to a dropped kerb, I don’t understand why they hurt so much to walk over. I normally put my headphones on and listen to music or a podcast and that helps distract me from the pain but also makes time seem to go faster somehow.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 20/08/2023 17:24

I need an audio book and my dog or else I'm bored to death!

Timetochangegonzo · 20/08/2023 17:25

Me. Totally boring. I can never really fathom when someone says ‘let’s go for a walk’, like I feel they must really not want to too. But apparently most people do!

ecuse · 20/08/2023 17:37

I'm not disabled but I do just bloody hate walking. I take no pleasure from it as a leisure activity at all and if I need to get from A to B I will look for any other option (bike, scooter, bus). My heart sinks when people suggest a lovely walk as I know I'm supposed to enjoy it but I just CANNOT BE ARSED.

Girasoli · 20/08/2023 17:45

I love walks - either in mountains/the country or just to get places.

I don't like lane swimming though, of the gym.

woodhill · 20/08/2023 17:52

EmpressSoleil · 20/08/2023 15:09

I like walking in nature or around a new or favorite city. Just walking round my own boring area! No. I don't like walking for walkings sake. There has to be some reason/purpose. You will never hear me say "I'm popping out for a walk" 😂so I agree with you.

Yes I need a purpose

I'm not mad keen either

uncomfortablydumb53 · 20/08/2023 18:01

Yes, me too I'm also disabled and find uneven ground really difficult and painful
I love the idea of a coastal path with a beautiful view but not possible for me
I do love a vintage steam train or a boat trip if someone to help me on and off

maddiemookins16mum · 20/08/2023 18:16

I only enjoy walks if they have a purpose (even if the purpose is tea and cake 6 miles). I can’t stand aimlessly wandering just for the sake of it.
MN is slightly obsessed with ‘going for a walk’, especially on Christmas Day (even if it’s pissing down).

sunshinesupermum · 20/08/2023 18:17

I used to love walking when I had a dog or visiting new places but sadly I can no longer walk easily and I have never liked walking aimlessly on my own.

Terrribletwos · 20/08/2023 18:28

Yes, I agree OP, I find walking boring and I have to push myself to do it cos it's supposedly good for mental health. Well I have found it is not. Walking only makes me look further into myself and that doesn't have a good outcome! The thing that walking takes you out of yourself is alien to me...it actually takes me totally inward!

I am now trying to walk with podcasts and that is somewhat a bit better.

GOODCAT · 20/08/2023 18:48

I like walking, but no disabilities. We usually go for a walk at least once, usually twice at the weekend. I also walk at lunchtime when at work unless it is particularly miserable weather or I am horribly busy. I have an office job so like to move rather than sit more. Other forms of exercise would be hard to fit into lunchtime.

I like getting out to clear my mind and like the fresh air. It is also free exercise and I get to see whatever area I am walking through.

Riapia · 20/08/2023 20:00

I enjoy Claire Balding’s rambles on R4. I can sit with a mug of tea.

GoingForAWalkortwo · 20/08/2023 20:02

Thanks all. I feel better knowing that I'm not entirely alone. I'm genuinely happy for others that they enjoy it so much but I don't think I'll ever appreciate going for a walk merely for the sake of walking.

I love walking but can understand why you don’t. It’s miserable being in pain and having mobility issues. I feel the same about other sports everyone seems to love!

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/08/2023 21:51

Nope, I absolutely love walking. I live semi rurally and never get bored of the countryside around me. I totally get that it's difficult if you have disabilities though, surely find something that is enjoyable for you instead?

MarieLowe · 02/12/2024 14:03

modgepodge · 20/08/2023 15:15

No disability here but I have always found it really boring. Many a weekend was ruined as a child with a walk.

I don’t mind walking to get somewhere, but walking round in a circle for the sake of it? No. If I want to catch up with a friend I’d rather go for coffee. one of the many reasons I’ll never own a dog 😂

I agree on everything you've put here. Hated walking has a child. Two miles from the bus stop back home after shopping with mum . I'd never have a dog. I'd be sick picking pop up, lol We used to let our dog go in the back garden, as a kid , now everyone walks them daily. Not for me. Don't mind odd walk if it's entertaining, like a nice town few shops and cafe. Lol I live in very rural area. Can't think of anything more boring than going out the gate to walk, done it twice before 😂

Sidebeforeself · 02/12/2024 14:08

icebearforpresident · 20/08/2023 16:13

I have never understood the point of going for a walk. I will walk anywhere I need to go but I’m not going to go out walking for the sake of it.

You see it on here every year at Xmas, people talk about getting up, doing the presents then going out for a ‘lovely walk’. Fuck that, I can’t think of anything worse. I’m getting up, doing the presents and cracking open the first bottle of Buck’s Fizz by 10am before falling asleep on the couch after dinner.

Couldn’t agree more!

Plus..my nose always runs , I need the loo at some point, I’ll usually develop a blister etc. I find sedate country scenes boring and I have no head for heights!

Sadly I am married to an enthusiastic walker so we have many discussions about this!
